“Great service and amazing location”
Reviewed August 9, 2014

Like most of the people we met in Vietnam, this was amazing too. The hotel is lovely and is set in one of the cutest locations in the middle of the old quarter. The location is probably why I would live here again. The buffet breakfast is good but could use for more variety .
Our room had a city view on the 2nd floor, which also meant we were 3 meters away from the local bar, and the music was loud at time .

Room Tip: Some of rooms are quiet small so check up and make sure to get one of the bigger rooms.

My husband, two teenaged daughters and I spent five nights at the Hanoi Pearl at the start of our Vietnam trip in mid-July 2014. We arrived in the early evening in a large taxi arranged by the hotel in advance at our request. The taxi was costlier at US$28 vs about $20 if we'd jumped into a cab at the airport but it was worth it. The large van taxi easily accommodated our family of four and six bags and we were not charged extra when our plane arrived about 30 minutes late.

Since we arrived at dinner time, we were not adventurous and ate at an American style restaurant about a block away. Big mistake, it was one of our costlier and least tasty meals on the trip. In the daylight of the next day, we realized we were only a block away from Hoan Kiem Lake, the water puppet show (although we didn't go) and from two banks open Monday-Saturday. We exchanged money at the bank for a slightly better rate than at the hotel.

The night market held on weekends (Friday-Sunday from 8pm-midnight) is just two blocks away. It was fun to go for a night. My husband bought decent leather shoes for $35 (considered very pricy there) and we bought some t-shirts for ourselves and friends (i-pho as a play on iPhone) that we negotiated down to $2 each. Bear in mind it's hard to buy clothes as everyone there is tiny compared to Americans. An extra large t-shirt is the same as a large in the US, as we were guided (correctly) by a sales lady. At some point you feel ridiculous bargaining over the equivalent of 50 US cents.

If you wake early, walk around the block. At the end in the early mornings (6-8 am) you'll see vendors selling to locals, everything from fruits and vegetables to meet and chicken in baskets. Very photogenic if you don't head to the central market.

Definitely hit the central market of Dong Xuan, which is about 5 blocks away open every day during the day, and also near the end of the night market (although it's not open then). This is a market for locals, so the tourist shopping would be hair clips, some souvenir stands, fruit and the like.

Breakfast at the hotel was a big plus. You could skip lunch from all the options, but why bother when food is so inexpensive? The options were a mix of Vietnamese and Western options, including omelette, fruit, breads and pho. Order the Vietnamese coffee or iced coffee.

The folks at the front desk were very helpful in securing taxis and offering directions. Get directions written in Vietnamese for taxi drivers and grab a business card of the Hanoi Pearl so you can get back easily.

I took pictures of the white backgrounded and red or green striped-caps taxis off the internet, so we could travel safely without the hassle of bargaining for a ride. Most rides locally will cost $2-3 (US) even if you ride to the edge of the Old District as we did to see Ho Chi Minh complex and the "Hilton Hanoi."

We booked a family room of an adjoining suite with two bedrooms. The AC was very welcome, and the bathrooms were large.

As another reviewer wrote, don't rely on the pictures the hotel posted which resembles a cool hip small hotel. It's not furnished that way and those were likely architect renderings. It's adequate hotel style furniture.

Please also note a "city view" largely means you are staring at a building across the street. It was fine though, as we overlooked the street in front of the hotel.

Try the Orchid Spa which is about 2 blocks from the hotel, go right out the hotel, turn right and it's across the street. We booked a facial and pedicures which cost us about $25 apiece, less than the hotel spa prices.

My husband loved the baguette and beef sandwiches made by a woman on the street (turn right outside the hotel, walk about 100 feet) during the day. Only 80 US cents each!

Beautiful and comfortable rooms. The hotel is conveniently a minute away from Hoan Kiem Lake. A few minutes away from St. Joseph Cathedral and the interesting 'themed' streets of the Old Quarter. The room in the photos where I booked though was much bigger than the actual but it's ok. I still wish we could have stayed longer.

Personalized service from the time you step in. Junie the receptionist went out of her way to help us re organize the booking so we could fit in a night in halong bay.
Was upgraded the first night and when we returned from halong it was even better as we were then upgraded to one of two suites with balconies. Definitely will stay here on our next trip!!!!

This hotel is in the heart of the Old District of Hanoi, and is close to everything you need to see and do. The service is terrific, whether you want advice about tours, spas, shopping or dining. I think the hotel is one of the older boutique hotels in this part of Hanoi, so it is starting to date a little, but overall I was very pleased with my stay here.

Room Tip: Just be aware that there are some bars across the street, so rooms lower down are noisier, but closi...

rooms were great. our room was on the 9th floor and was clean and well maintained. the only thing I didn't like was the telephone shower which did not have a holder where we could keep the shower head above my body. breakfast was so so. Location is quite good with bars and restaurants close by and the picturesque lake all within walking distance.

a good choice for a comfortable sleeping environment
