Unless you are specifically interested in details about the several Vietnamese mountain tribes I would give it a miss. Found it very boring and it is well out of the city centre so requires a separate trip to see.

The inside displays are very old fashioned by western standards. Outside the replicated houses from different ethnic groups of Vietnam are much more interesting. The museum is included in many of the day tours of Hanoi.

inside is pretty standard museum information on the different vietnamese cultures and their backgrounds. Outside makes this a must do. There are the actual houses from each group. They are really interesting and have information on each in different languages. The staff are mainly young volunteers who are really keen. Let them try your language as they are keen and enthusiastic. There are also musicians and examples of water puppets. A nice restaurant is there too with good coffees.

If your visit to Vietnam doesn't include tours to more remote areas or to the mountain areas, this is a great place to spend a couple of hours learning about the different ethnic groups of Vietnam, where and how they live. Interesting replica buildings to visit in the grounds. Worth some of your time.

A good place to learn about the over 50 ethnic groups that live in Vietnam, and how they were treated throughout history. A good display of photographs. A big section of the museum was reserved for a display of sex educations for young people which has very graphic pictures of genitalia and many Vietnamese elementary school children looking at the pictures, giggling and taking photos with their cell phones. There are sculptures made out of condoms which the children also found entertaining. Outside, there are styles of Vietnamese houses built to scale. In some, one has to remove one's shoes to enter. There is also a small lake with a free water puppet show. It was raining when i was there, so tourists huddled under café umbrellas to stay dry. The French café at the museum is wonderful, it is an open terrace with a roof, with comfy plush seats and very friendly service. The sandwiches, coffee and ice cream are excellent.
