This is a great museum especially for children, the outside area with life size reconstructed ethnic minority houses is brilliant. There is a lot of great information and you can easily spend 4 - 5 hours here - there is also a great restaurant from the Hoa Sua chain (charity for helping Street Kids) Definitely worth a visit.

This museum is worth a visit just to help understand the complicated mix of ethnic backgrounds which have created modern Vietnam. It is not somehere that you need to spend hours at, unless you are the very studious type and the external relocated tribal buildings is probablt the most informative area to spend time.

In August and September, I had the wonderful opportunity to live in Hanoi for two months. I lived with a Vietnamese family and being there for researching purposes In the afternoon I went to Ethnology Museum in Hanoi with my roommate. It 'a great museum, very interesting and with the rate 1:1 scale housing and rites of ethnic minorities (more than 50!) of Vietnam. What I would recommend is to make a visit to the museum, and then a trip to Sapa in northern Vietnam, to get to know these wonderful ethnic groups.

This visit was part of our day with our "Hanoi Kid" and if you like musuems (and I do) it is not to be missed. If you are not going to have the chance to visit some of the countless ethnic villages in the north then this will give you some insight. If you are lucky enough to get out into the villages then this will help to prepare you. We stayed more than 3 hours but could have easily stayed longer.
