Called in for a late lunch. Small menu in afternoon but we still had plenty of choices. Fantastic mixed spring rolls and we were both happy with our mains - pho & beef noodles. Delicious! Finished up with creme caramel and floating mango... All fantastic. Great food, really nice service, pretty outlook from upstairs ....you earn the view as the stairs are very steep!

I went there for lunch this week, and I got to admit that the lunch set is a great value.
Portions are big, varied and very well presented... But i was a little disappointed with the flavors... One of the dishes was clearly too salted and another one was insipid... I guess i was just there on a bad day because i'm really not used to that kind of mistakes with that chef...

We tried the Porte d'Annam on our last night in Hanoi. Situated a few meters away from the St Joseph cathedrale. To reach the restaurant on the first floor you haver to go through the steepest staircase but the climb its worth it. The decor is a typical french colonial house. Freshly squeezed juices were served in clay pots, the waiter recommended me a Larue beer from the middle region of Vietnam, very nice and a change from the Hanoi beers. A small pot of cool cucumbers sticks were served with spices to dip in and a selection of rice bread and french roll with a hot chilli dip (watch out really hot!).
For appetisers we combined two plates of pate imperial who were really nice, crispy and tasty with fried duck nems wrapped in lettuce and rice paper.
For the main we ordered a perch fillet filleded with vegetables, wrapped in a banana leave and cooked in a 333 beer can. The waiter brings the can to the table and unwrapped the all dish. That was really tasty and served with white rice with a slightly spices sauce. The porks ribs grilled with honey and spices were just exquisite. For dessert try the creme brulee with banana or if you like cream cheese, try the home made version with garlic and herbs.
Perfect and profesional service lead by a young French Maitre D and a team of young vietnamese waiters!
Great dinner, 3 courses, 2fresh juices, 2 beers for less than $40 for two. A must to try in Hanoi

French/Vietnamese fusion. Good flavors, presentation, and service. The stairs are the steepest I saw in Hanoi, and that is saying something.
