My friend and I arranged with Hanoi Free Walking Tours to tour the Vietnam Museum of Ethnology. Our guide Thong Nguyen Ha Van, along with another guide who was being trained, met us at our hotel and off we went to the museum. Thong led us through the museum and provided a wonderful tour. We felt we learned a lot about the 54 ethnic groups in Vietnam; our understanding of the peoples of Vietnam and their history was greatly enhanced Thong was very personable and we had some terrific discussions that afternoon-one of the highlights of our trip thus far. Arranging the tour was easy and it really is free! The warmth and spirit of these young, intelligent guides gives me great hope for Vietnam's future.

We did the French Quater tour. The tour is definitely more than just a regular tour. Other than famouse landmarks, we also visited places where only locals would go to like ice-cream corner, special egg coffee in a hidden valley (sounds weird but it did taste good), etc. The guides were students from university and they were incredibly nice. No hidden scam like visiting shops and such. They didn't ask us for any tips either (although we did buy them ice-cream & coffee and give them some tips, which they will use for their English club). It was a great opportunity to ask questions about Vietnamese society/culture and get answers from the young generation. Overall, we highly recommend it. Thank you so much once again.

My partner and I booked on the hanoifreewalkingtour website (via the tripadvisor link) and it was one of our best experiences in Vietnam and definitely one of the highlights of our stay in Hanoi. Two students, Puppy and Candy (their chosen English names) arrived at our hotel in the Old Quarter. There had been a big thunderstorm in the morning and they emailed to say they'd be 1/2 hour late. They arrived on their bikes and proceeded to take us to the Hoa Lo prison and Temple of Literature. Then we took a break for lunch, asking them to choose wherever they would like, since we already knew from other reviews that they would not accept a payment. They took us to Quan An Cao (?) which was at the top of our list anyway. Then we went for a wonderful walk around the Old Quarter and ended up at truly local coffee shop (up a dark flight of stairs into a hidden little hole in the wall, full of young folks and some backpackers) where we had egg coffees for 15000 each and a bowl of sunflower seeds (another 5000). We sat on the little plastic stools, sipping something like a liquid tiramisu, cracking seeds and hanging out overlooking the lake like the other young locals. It was the most extraordinary experience -- mostly because of the completely fresh and open attitudes of our young guides, all of 21 and 22, in their 3rd years of university. Their English was quite understandable though the point of their voluntary guide activities is to improve their speaking skills. They both carried notebooks and would ask about English expressions -- such as "life sentence" vs "prison sentence" and "death sentence" which all came up at the Hoa Lo prison. Or when we asked them about the "cat poop coffee" that is apparently an expensive commodity more for foreigners -- they had never heard of such a thing even though Puppy's father grows coffee beans and they laughed with embarrassment at the explanation of "poop" and how the coffee is produced. They were perfectly open to sharing about their lives and understandings of growing up in today's Vietnam, about the American war and what is taught to their generation and they were politely curious about our lives. We had many gales of laughter and they were easy to break into giggles -- it was enlightening, entertaining and just plan fun with completely unjaded Vietnamese. Puppy and Candy were the very best, we felt like we made some young friends in Hanoi. We cannot recommend them more highly -- this was truly a great and genuine experience. At the end of the day, they walked us back to our hotel and we went through a bit of a struggle trying to foist some small donation to their club, which they refused to our frustration. We can only hope that the English and insights we shared were worthwhile for them. These student guides are simply the best and we would give them 10 stars if we could!

A fantastic tour provided by the most delightful young ladies Puppy and Thuy who were great company and very entertaingin. This was definitely the highlight of our trip to Hanoi and allowed us some insight into the Vietnamese people and culture. They showed us round all the best sights in Hanoi and their knowledge of the city was excellent. I would highly recommend this tour to anybody visiting Hanoi.

We did two tours. Both were first class. We visited all the major sites. However the tours are much more than this,as you get a real insight to every day life in Hanoi. We were taken to excellent places for lunch and let the guides choose the meal for us .It was first class.
Our tour guides for the all day city tour were Puppy and Thuy. For the half day tour Thong was our guide. They were all very good company with excellent knowledge the city. It must be the best way to see the city and it's free.
