The old quarter is so full of charm and intrigue, it will keep you busy for hours. Once you get beyond the frenetic roads and learn how to navigate the bike-packed streets, there is so much to see and you really do get immersed in local life. Try a Vietnamese meal sat on a plastic chair watching the world go by or head to the famous bia hoi area to sample an unusual cocktail and cook hotpot in the street. Look out for train street too. The train runs right by the front of houses in the old quarter and is a remarkable sight.

This is a great district to stay in an explore. Plenty of food choices and lots of shopping. I stumbled upon a free student-led tour of the market streets here on my last day and really enjoyed the insights my guide provided.

Looks great at night. Very lively. Music all over. People dancing the Jive next to the lake. Great place to just sit and enjoy the view and take in the people walking and jogging. Lots of shopping too. But bargain hard.

We ventured around there both during the day and night, and was so busy. I enjoyed all the old buildings, the locals etc, however it’s very busy. At nights, if you like crowded streets with street food and restaurant, it’s the place to be. As for myself, I like quietness where I can walk at ease, I found it quite overwhelming. Not saying it’s not good, but it’s not my cup of tea.

We chose the Old Quarter on a whim, being tired of cities that have become sterile, cookie cutter copies of too many other cities, even too much like home. We were absolutely charmed by all the street life, bars, restaurants, food stalls, the Old Quarter of Ha Noi was such an explosion of sights, sounds, life and vibrancy we fell in love with it in minutes. Be aware though, the traffic, scooter, bikes and cars do not respect crossings, or pedestrians and blocked paths mean a lot of walking in the gutters, not to my liking at all! All in all, simply fascinating experience, highly recommended but be very careful of traffic and crossings, only rule is no rules!

Old quarter is essentially a good place to stay for tourist looking to move around Hanoi. Bun Cha Dac Kim is nearby (famous bun cha - beware of fake one nearby)

In case you go to Hanoi you should walk or even carry a cycle ride (with rider) around the existing Quarter. This's exactly where everything is purchased and offered on the street. A wide array of sights scents and tastes. Each of this mixed in with the ridiculous driving of natives on mopeds. Do not care you're very secure in every regard apart from several of the food.
