Travelled around the old quarter on a cyclo tour, so much to see and a great introdution to Hanoi. Great for sporting huge, heavy loads on mopeds.

Hanoi Old Quarter was my recommended place to stay when visiting Hanoi. You will be able to see small old houses with shops/stores selling different sorts of merchandises. It's a very lively place and you could walk around looking for goods that are uniquely made in Vietnam. Don't fail to taste their ground coffee, it really tasted good and the aroma so inviting! Also try to eat some foods prepared by locals like the spring rolls, dried fruits and vegetables. Though some vendors were persistent to sell their goods, they are amenable to give you good price when you haggle. The stores in the Old quarter usually closed at 10 PM, but you may just walk to nearby Hoan Kiem Lake with lots of coffee shops and restaurants.

The old quarter of Hanoi, is small narrow streets with all sorts of shops bundled together by category. Flower street, tin street, towel street etc etc. Lovely French style cafes. A must see.

The old quarter is fabulous but every one of the donut street cart vendors tried to rip us off. They try to give you 10,000 D bills for change when they should be giving you 100K bills. They don't like to give you a price. Don't do anything in Hanoi without first confirming a price.

The old quarter is an awesome place to visit, in fact I would recommend staying there as we did; stay in the heart of all the action. We spent a few times just walking around soaking it all in and this area of Hanoi has such a great feel to it; from the crazy amount of motorbikes when you cant cross the street, to the people eating Pho on the footpath it is such a great place.

Make sure you try to get there on a Friday, Saturday or Sunday night for the night market - its a bit touristy but worth the look for a few bits and pieces.
