The constant refrain from motorbikes and taxis and the numerous near collisions is an entertainment in itself! Central to all the activity in Hanoi - just spend your time around the streets with the shops and restaurants all too numerous to mention.

Hanoi was our first stop in Viet nam and the old quater is full on honking horns, driving wherever there is space no matter which side of the road and no pavement! Once you're used to just walking into the road and weaving around the mopeds and cars its fun to see the streets with themed trades, eg one with pots and pans, another with threads and fabrics. Plenty of opportunities to get photos of women carrying the bamboo stick over their shoulder with two plates of fruit, overloaded mopeds with 3 people and their luggage, and plenty of street side stalls of food. Just choose a hotel off a main road to avoid the non stop honking when you sleep! Nice to walk to the french quarter for contrast afterwards then west lake too.

Extremely busy place filled with motorbikes and tuc-tucs vying for space on overcrowded streets. Tour operators on every street and some fantastic street food. You do take your life int your hands jus crossing the street, but I guess that's part of the appeal. A must-visit in Hanoi if you want to get a feel for the place away from the cold and sterile mausoleum area.

These streets are really something to see, one street for one commodity, haberdashery, shoes, silk, bamboo scaffolding , lanterns and kites etc etc! Be prepared for pavement crowded with parked motorbike and scooters and little cafes!! Motorbikes,, scooters, cycle rickshaws, vehicles, and pedestrians all flowing one around the other, with the sound of car horns and bells everywhere !
Watch you purse, and go and soak up the atmosphere!!

Industrious and frenetic, plus a little bit gritty. Certainly the most interesting and character filled part of Hanoi. A real mixed use community with shops, eating houses, businesses and residences spilling out onto the street.
