We visited the temple of literature as part of our tour of Vietnam, with our excellent tour guide Thao (not sure of the spelling), who gave us an amazing introduction to the importance of the educational system with its links to social, political and religious way of life through the history of this amazing country.
Thoroughly enjoyable, can highly recommend the services of a guide or it might look like just another temple.

Our guide Duc took us to the Confucius temple. It was very interesting especially when I had a reasonable knowledge of Chinese characters. One could see barely visible carving of names of successful candidates of the Imperial Examinations and descriptions written on the stones. Amazing to see relics that were almost 1000 years old.

It is worth a visit.

Nice place to visit in Hanoi. Full of history about difficulties on education and the long term to reach wisdom.

Although the Vietnamese headed there Chinese conquerors, they revered Confucius for his dedication to learning. So it’s all about Confucius and higher education. Beautiful gardens and red and gold painted altars.

The place is well maintained. The place has stages of learning which an advanced learner in those days went through. This place is very much worth visiting when you visit Hanoi as one sees an important part of the cultural roots of the country and society here. We went with a student guide from one of the free guide companies. They basically come free to enable them to practice their English. It was a nice experience.

I paid for the audio guide which was useful. There were some explanatory write ups on boards which visitors can read but there were not a lot of those and may be difficult to get close to when it becomes crowded with visitors. The grounds are beautifully maintained and can be covered in an hour. Highly recommended for those into history, culture and architecture.

It's the first University of Vietnam where the King and Queen or royal family study in the past. That's good story to tell with your children about the very simple traditional studying but with excellent students, working so hard...
