Owner description: A rare breed of turtle enjoys this popular lake almost as much as countless locals and tourists. Hoan Kiem Lake is a dynamic daily tableau, from morning walks amid locals doing exercises on the shore, to young couples water-gazing on park benches, to the multiple shopping and sight-seeing opportunities in the vicinity. Centrally located in the city, Hoan Kiem Lake serves as a massive home base, and provides endless people-watching and recreational opportunities on the edge of the Old Quarter.

A great place to get a way from the noise and traffic of Hanoi. The walk around the lake is wonderful.

Our guide told us the story about the Lake and looking around at the surrounding areas it was like a fairy tale come to life between the old and the new.

This is a beautiful small lake in the middle of the city. We saw many newly wedded couples posing for photos. We recommend to have a walk around the lake after dark to watch all the lights which sets off the beautiful shape of the trees around the lake. The Ngoc Son temple and the red bridge out to it gives the lake a mysterious setting.

This lake was peaceful and great to see. It has a temple on the island in the middle. We went out there and relaxed for a bit. I think we were a little confused about the house on another island. Our tour guide told us a story but she sounded unsure of herself so we weren't sure if the story was accurate. Needless to say it was nice lake and I love the location.

Hoan Kiem lake is unique. Steeped in history, beloved by locals, a never-ending cycle of life revolving around it's edge. Too many tour groups are not given the space and time to truly appreciate this place.

My advice, if on a tour, is to skip some of the planned tourist activities and crappy tourist food and instead take an evening to wander around the lake a few times. Watch the Hanoians going about their daily rituals. Observe the happenings on the fringes. Be enchanted by the evening lanterns and lights. Just take the time. Hoan Kiem lake isn't so much about the lake itself, it's about the life around the lake. There is no better way, in my opinion, to feel the heartbeat of Hanoi than to take an evening stroll around the lake. See the young, the adult, the mature and the old all enjoy this wonderful place.

Not to be missed - MAKE TIME to take time and you won't regret it at all. Don't listen to your obsessive tour guide wanting to take you to yet another place. Linger here and enjoy.
