“A must do in Hanoi”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 11, 2013

You'll get a one-sided view of the war, but it's historical significance, particularly to Americans (they have the flight suit of John McCain) makes it a must-do in Hanoi. As others have said, only a small portion remains, but you'll learn that the it started out as a French prison so has quite a bit of history behind it. Worth a couple of hours to visit and review the posted material.

“Big propaganda show”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 11, 2013

Only about one third of the prison remains as a museum. While the displays of prison life and the jail cells were interesting, it was somewhat spoiled for me by the propaganda posters and lecture we received as part of the tour.

“Hanoi Hilton”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 9, 2013

Being a Vietnam Vet I just had to see this imfamous prison that I had heard so much about from the yanks during my tour in '69. I had a pretty good idea about what the French were up to and then the US but according to the photographs on the walls it really was portrayed as a Hilton Hotel. I doubt very much that it was anything like that for the US POW's. Anyhow it was indeed an interesting visit and worth while taking the time to visit. Just remember, Museums in Hanoi are not open on Mondays and they all close up shop spot on 12.00 and do not reopen until 13.30 but the entry fee is rediculously cheep (about US$2.00).

“Worth Your Time”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 9, 2013

It's not a "fun" attraction, but very much worth the time. Only a small section of the old prison remains and it has been made into a museum, but it gives you a real sense of what it was like. Easy to cover in an hour or two at the most, depending on how much you stop and read. It is a monument to "Man's inhumanity to man." Built by the French and use to hold and torture Vietnamese people before its use by the Vietnamese to hold the likes of Senator John McCain and Ambassador Peterson. The portrayal of how "enjoyable" it was for the American pilots held there strains credibility, but other than that, it is highly factual and very educational.
