“Cruel past”
Reviewed May 15, 2013

We humans, how depraved we can be - a salient reminder of where we've all come from and certainly paints a picture of the long road to independence for Vietnam

“Interesting visit”
Reviewed May 15, 2013 via mobile

We went to the old prison today and enjoyed walking through, seeing the various prison areas and photos of the conditions that prisoners were kept in. The exhibitions are well set up but there is not a great deal of information in English, just a brief description under each photo. Well worth a visit.

“Disappointing”
Reviewed May 12, 2013 via mobile

I went here today based on a few recommendations. Its was so boring. The best thing were the old cells and the creepy music they played. That made the atmosphere interesting at times. There is only a tiny section of the old prison complex left. The knocked the rest to build a silly modern tower block. From the model in the museum it seems as though they knocked down the more interesting parts. The memorial wall in nice however.

“Quite interesting, but full of propaganda!”
Reviewed May 12, 2013

There is only a small part of the prison remaining, a large hotel has been built on the rest of the site.
It was built by the French in the 1800's & housed political prisoners both men & women, the cells where people were manacled, were tiny & one can only imagine the conditions that prisoners endured, it was pretty warm & claustrophobic, just walking past some of the cells!
It was also used to incarcerate captured American airmen, at the time of the Vietnamese war & there is plenty of propaganda around the prison, including repeat playing of footage from the war, which say how well the Americans were treated there, which is in stark contrast to what the prisoners actually reported.
They actually christened it the Hanoi Hilton!
