“aka Hanoi Hilton”
Reviewed December 11, 2012

Graphically shows the harsh treatment the Vietnamese independence people suffered under the French - a real guillotine still stands.
This stands in contrast to treatment of US pilots held there (as presented)

“Sobering experience”
Reviewed December 11, 2012

When travelling to Hanoi this is probably the first landmark that springs to mind to Westerners.
Very little is left of the original prison, only the main entrance and a few other buildings.

The main theme of the prison is about the deplorable conditions in which the French kept and treated their political prisoners, but at the same time fails to mention that the same was done to POW's during the Vietnam conflict.

Seeing the conditions, I can only imagine how horrible it must have been to spend years in captivity here. I gained a lot of respect for those who made it through without going completely insane and felt sad for those who did not.

“Worthwhile”

Sobering exhibit on the prison and the brutal conditions many Vietnamese activists faced - mostly during the French colonization years. Mannequins make the displays more graphic and present.

“A "must" on your list of things to see in Hanoi.”
Reviewed December 9, 2012

The historical prison is a must see for all in Hanoi. It is very busy with tourists each day. It will take you back in time to the origins of the time of French Indo-China and the atrocities that occured against the Vietnamese by the French. Well presented. There is also a section dedicated to the imprisonment of Americans when this was called by them as the "Hanoi Hilton".
