“One time visit”
Reviewed November 18, 2012

The exhibition at the prison is well planned and interesting. At some point however, it is a bit obvious that a fair portion of it is propaganda. For us even watching the propaganda unravel was interesting, and ironical.
If you can take it with a pinch of salt, it is worth a one time visit. I really liked the sculptures on the boundary wall inside the museum.

“Well worth a visit”
Reviewed November 16, 2012

We spent 4 days in Hanoi and visited this place as we'd run out of things to do. It was well worth a visit, very photogenic, and very informative.
BEWARE the taxis outside the gate as you leave, their meters run at 5 times the rate of the mainstream taxis. A trip from the prison to Old Quarter would normally cost 30,00 Dong but the meter showed 290,000 Dong. I told the driver it wasn't going to happen and gave him the right amount. He knew he was in the wrong so didn't argue much, just said "that's my company charge". He wouldn't take the money so I left it on his front seat and got out. This was our only bad experience with taxis in Hanoi.

“Do not believe all you see!”
Reviewed November 15, 2012

The propoganda was an issue, circumstances were portrayed very differently to those imprisoned by the French to those imprsoned by the Vietnamese.

“Sad history”
Reviewed November 15, 2012

A real eye opener with an unguided look around the old prison. Each of the rooms you walk through has pictures and accounts of life as it was, with dummies in specific positions of daily life and torture. It only cost Aus$1 entry and took about 45mins at your own leisure. About 10mins walk from our hotel near cathedral.
