“Good visit with some outdated propoganda”
Reviewed April 14, 2012

The Hoa Lo Prison, dubbed the Hanoi Hilton by US servicemen during the 1960s, has a history dating back to the beginning of the 20th century. I didn't realise this until I visited the place, which made it all the more interesting. The section about the North Vietnamese treating the US PoWs fairly is pure propoganda material dating back to the war. Also I'm not sure if some of the images of the female PoWs under French rule are authentic as they appear in the War Remants museum in Saigon as images of PoWs under US occupation of Con Dao. Other than that, very interesting place and good for a short-ish visit, around 40-50 mins.

“Gave me shivers”
Reviewed April 13, 2012

Propaganda was very present here, but it's understandable. Visiting this prison gives you a very good look at what exactly happened in Hanoi through all those years. The dungeons were very impressive.

“Don't go out of your way unless you have time to kill”
Reviewed April 13, 2012

Some interesting exhibits here invariably mixed in with a decent dose of propaganda, but it was very, very repetitive...

Some of the exhibits included the flight suit of Senator John McCain and some photos of him when he was at the prison.

If you are walking nearby, or have spare time on your hands, you may as well go and visit. But otherwise don't make any special trip to come here.
