Make sure you wear clothes that cover your knees.
A very reverend resting place for uncle Ho, supported by
commercial tourist shops? Is nothing sacred?

Very grand. The people of this country hold this man in very high regard. Go early as it gets very busy.

Seeing ole Ho there like an ashen corpse. Apparently, the Vietnamese are experts at embalming and were called in to embalm Mao as well. Still its a little strange to see Ho there from 40 years ago. But obviously I was curious, since I saw Mao as well!

I think that the importance of Ho Chi Minh to modern Vietnam makes this a must see attraction. Although the queue looked pretty long, it only took about 15 or 20 minutes to get to see him. Once inside everything is very regimented - just go with the flow. After visiting here, you can go to his house which is just next door.

We visited the mausoleum grounds and paid a visit to Ho Chi Minh himself while we were in Hanoi. It's an interesting experience on a couple of levels, but probably not one of the more memorable experiences from Vietnam. If you go inside the mausoleum you'll spend all of 20 seconds walking through the room where Ho Chi Minh rests, and he looks most similar to a sculpture from Madame Tussaud's. Ho Chi Minh is an important figure to the Vietnamese people, particularly in the northern part of the country, and visiting the mausoleum will get you as close to Vietnamese soldiers as you are likely to get during your visit. But overall I think the visit is much more meaningful for the locals than for the tourists.
