The Sofitel Plaza is located in central Hanoi, although is a long-ish walk from the Old Quarter (or a short cab ride unless the cabbie decides to take you for a ride - literally - to charge you a few extra thousand Dong). The location is fabulous though - the view from the rooms overlooking the lake is unparalleled. On a clear day (of which we were fortunate to have two), you have a breathtaking view of Hanoi. The roof-level bar has the same view - just about worth the rather expensive price of drinks.
The rooms are a good size with spacious (for the Sofitel chain) bathrooms. The toiletries are beautiful (Lanvin) and the amenities are what you would expect. The mini-bar prices are outrageous, but the room service prices quite reasonable. The beds are comfortable and come with a good choice of pillows (although I insist on bringing my own these days!).
Breakfast is too chaotic - the dining room isn't very big and the egg station not as efficient as some other places I've stayed recently. The coffee is good! Plunger coffee for each table - a nice touch.
Check-in/out was very efficient; lobby staff very friendly.
The hotel's immediate environs are not too tourist-friendly, although the streets are perfectly safe to explore to get a bit of local colour.More
