Fantastic hotel this one.
It's half art deco vintage Hanoi, half modernist asian. But it is 100% lovely, efficient, friendly, and perfectly located for everything one would want or need to do in Hanoi. It even had a swanky late night bar where we ran for a last ditch effort at eating after a very long day of traveling to get there.
As in most large cities, even with a "suite", we were still just a bit cramped with our 6 weeks worth of travel supplies...yet, we enjoyed every minute of this city, it's attractions, history, culture, people, and accommodations.

Centrally located the lake is a short walk away. Water puppet show is just down the road. Hotel offers good selection for breakfast buffet. Rooms were clean and well maintained. Pool area was very nice but hard to enjoy the sun as there are surrounding high rises that provide afternoon shade. Club room has very limited selection of food, beverage and hours of service. Truly enjoyed having lunch out on the sidewalk bistro while watching the sights of Hanoi.

We arrived in Hanoi late afternoon. Hotel limousine (BMW 7 series) picked us up at the airport and took us to the hotel. Cold drinks and macaroons were offered by our chauffeur. What a nice gesture!

Arrival at the hotel was warm and welcoming. We stayed in the original building. One of the receptionists escorted us to our room and check in took place there. Very convenient.

Our room faced the courtyard and we requested a city view instead. There was one more room available and we were lucky to have it. It faced a park and we had a private balcony.

The room was traditional, historical and comfortable. It was not very big but high ceilings made it airy. The bed was a little but uncomfortable to our taste but good enough. Our room was very clean. Bathroom furnished with both tub and separate shower. They offer Lanvin amenities. Lovely.

Breakfast was delicious and variety good. Service courteous with a French flair.

The Spa was to die for. We had a 90 minute muscle tension massage in a couple's treatment room. It was perfect.

Service was attentive and polite everywhere. This hotel is highly recommended.

Room Tip: Try the original wing.

This is a wonderful hotel with great staff, very good service and excellent location. That is even before delving into its history, the guests who have stayed there ( Joan Baez, Jane Fonda, Pete Seegers, just to name a few). Have a drink in the Club bar, do a historical guided tour of the hotel. Fascinating place.

Room Tip: We were in the new wing but do try the old wing.

4 nights in the Opera wing with club privileges in January 2014.

This gives you access to a club room for breakfast and drinks (though the breakfast spread is broader in the other restaurants, which are just a lift ride away, and obviously less "exclusive" - we did both), and your own butler. Thang looked after us, and anything we wanted we got, not that our requests were too unusual. He lined up a couple of locals to take us on a cyclo tour of the old quarter, and they were fantastic. Not much english, but enough to get by, and they seemed to enjoy the 3 hour tour just as much as we did (and at $15 each for all that time, who could complain).

Got to know a hugely talented cocktail bar tender who invented and makes a flaming "Joan Baez" cocktail, prepared on a 3 tier "tree" where the flaming concoction tiers down to the serving shaker (evoking the American bombing when Joan was staying in the hotel and helped comfort scared guests with a song, or something like that). A real visual treat, and the drink itself is a sort of alcoholic pho - that's the comfort aspect. Hard to describe any better than that, but it was a unique experience. We had more than one, half for the taste and half to see the show!

Hanoi is, as you would expect, much less westernised than Hong Kong or Singapore. It is fascinating, but after a few hours our in the real world it can start to overwhelm, and the concept of coming "home" to a luxury western enclave (with a few local touches) and that relaxed old colonial feel is just delicious. Room and all facilities all full 5 star. This was the first stop on a 6 week world tour, and remains the most memorable. It should be experienced.
