Stayed for 5 days and were really pleased that we chose this hotel.
It's in a busy part of the old town, but our room was incredibly quiet and although reasonably small - well appointed.
Breakfast in the French dining room was superb - nothing was too much bother for the staff and the variety of food available was mind boggling.
The Lavin products supplied were a real treat - as was the massage we had at the Spa.
We loved the extras, like the macaroons that were beautifully wrapped and placed on our pillows each night.
Be sure to check out the local restaurants near by (within 10 mins walk) - great food, and a tour of the air raid shelter beneath the hotel is of interest.
Great choice!

Room Tip: We had a room facing into an internal court yard and it was wonderfully quiet

The stories are amazing, the colonial presence is overpowering. In some small way, the history of this iconic hotel reflects several distinct phases in the evolution of Vietnam itself. It is a self-contained property, with a cloistered feel to the place. One can easily imagine colonialists from the West who remained happy and well fed inside the grounds without every venturing outside the gate to mingle with the local population. The hotel is elegant, the staff is first-rate and responsive, the rooms are well-appointed, the breakfasts are memorable, as are the (high) prices. There are plenty of spaces in which to relax and unwind, to read, to exercise, and to eat. It's a place to see -- and be seen -- in Hanoi. And yet, the separateness from the city and its people is palpable. This is not the fault of management or staff, but rather the essence of this anachronistic colonial oasis. I would choose this hotel to escape Hanoi; I would choose a different hotel to embrace Hanoi. Definitely a memorable stay, but once was enough.

We stayed 5 nights in the Opera Wing, in a 48-sqm Grand Premium Room with what is called Club Metropole package. The only thing I thought was missing in the 48-sqm room, at least at the beginning, was a table and chair set up to eat in the room (there was a desk and lounge chair instead). But then we found out there is a choice of 3 restaurants and 3 bars on site. In restaurant Le Beaulieu we were lucky enough to eat a 2 Michelin star dinner prepared by visiting chef Bruno Oger from France, and in Angelina we ate among other things delicious Risotto with asparagous, black truffle and foie gras, and Farfalle Amatriciana – and great music in the lounge bar later during the evening. A large breakfast buffet can be taken in 4 different places in the hotel, so no time to get bored with scenery neither the food. So it is maybe no surprise that we ended up spending a lot of time in the hotel - in part due to the frequent rain in the week we were there, but also inspired by the hotel's very nice surroundings, its really nice gym, the fabulous Club lounge’s afternoon coffee and pre-dinner wine and cocktails with canapees (included in our room package). With this Club package we ended up never ordering room service neither using the minibar - by the way it includes free WIFI not just in room but throughout the hotel.

What drives this hotel is a clearly very well trained and professional staff, not only all english (and maybe french ?) speaking but also often taking the time for a chat and giving advice on the city sites. In common they appear to share pride in their work and in their treasured hotel, nice to see after seeing so rather different attitudes in many hotels in Asia. SUPERB butler service, will miss it dearly now !

The location was great, just 10 min walk to the Old Quarter and many art galleries shops and buildings from the colonial times in this area. The only real problem of staying in this hotel is that we sampled much less of the rest of Hanoi than anticipated at the start of our journey. Next time we will try to see more of Hanoi, and maybe it will not rain as much then either, but once you walk through these doors we will find it difficult to resist the Metropole’s charm, its pampering and its warm hospitality.

Room Tip: While there we asked to visit some of the historic wing rooms, and while these were very nice, this type of room in the Opera wing was much larger and more luxurious for sure. Try Angelina’s signature cocktail with cardamon and cinnamon flavours extracted by firing a mixture of cointreau and gin over these spices. Amazing....

Sofitel Legend Metropole Hanoï is a very typical hotel, heritage of the french colonial period.
I recommend it for its situation, the friendliness of its staff. Restaurants are well diversified and can meet all expectations

Room Tip: Choose a room with a view on the garden
