Lovely colonial style rarely found these days. Rooms are beautiful. Loved the old wing of the hotel. Room amenities are what you expect from a 5 star hotel. Service attentive and outstanding. Restaurant staff greeted us by name. Wonderful pool side bar for relaxing after a day of touring. Has a bomb shelter that was used by Hanoi Jane and Joan Baez during their controversial war time visits. Outside cafe may offer some of the best early evening people watching in the world. Appreciated the free wi-fi. Very conveniently located. Very pleasing and subdued interior. Felt like Graham Greene was going to show up any minute. Does not get any better than this on the road.

Room Tip: Try old wing rooms.

This is just a magical experience and like taking a step back in time without losing any modern luxuries or conveniences. The rooms are absolutely beautiful, simply elegant but not overstated.
The Bamboo Bar was my favorite place to dine; the atmosphere was casual and the menu was robust for a pool-side restaurant. The waitstaff were amazing and so helpful. I would stay in the original, historic Metropole wing of the hotel for the full effect. You can easily walk to the French Quarter, Opera House etc. Not a great place for young children in my opinion; the staff would of course be more than accommodating of them but there are bigger, less boutique hotels that I believe would be more appropriate. As far as activities, I took a trip to the famed Ha Long Bay for a day cruise. I recommend not going on a weekend and taking a private boat if you can. Unfortunately, the bay is being exploited and is very crowded; becoming increasingly populated with floating villages that are polluting the water. You are also constantly being solicited to buy trinkets etc from the people living in the villages. So, go early, go private and go now while it still is a very beautiful bay. Finally, be very careful of taking a Cyclo. I jumped in one to take a final spin around Hanoi before heading to the airport. I ended up getting my handbag torn off my body while taking my tour- everything from passport to wallet got stolen. The Cyclo name was Sans Souci and was parked right outside the hotel. The staff was absolutely incredible and were very helpful in resolving my dilemma.
I love Vietnam and the Metropole Hanoi. A wonderful place all around and I will return most definitely.

Room Tip: Stay in the historic wing!

This is just the most wonderful hotel. Worth going to Hanoi just to stay there. Don't even consider anywhere else. It has got elegance, class and style. The rooms are beautiful. The staff have the knack of making you feel that you are their most important guest.
We stayed on the 'club' floor (I think it was the 13th floor). It's 'club' lounge/dining room serves its own buffet breakfast and also offers complimentary morning coffee, afternoon high tea and canapes, light snacks and drinks between 5.00pm and 7.30pm as well as other priviledges. You don't feel like dinner afterwards.

Room Tip: Stay on the 'Club' floor. Well worth the extra money

Wow, one of the best hotels I've stayed in during the past 20 years of travelling. There's a reason it gets into the best hotel lists of Conde Nast, Travel and Leisure etc almost every year (check it out). Full of colonial character yet with all the modern conveniences you need. Good wi-fi, beautiful rooms, beautiful bathrooms, lovely bar by the pool, the best spa I've been to, helpful and friendly staff and a great location near the Opera and the Hoan Kiem lake. You can also be in the fascinating old quarter in 10-15 mins walking along the lake. Having visited 45 countries in 20 years this hotel is in my top 5. And great value too (compared to similar places in other countries; in London this place would cost you 5 times what it does in Hanoi)

Room Tip: Rooms overlooking the internal garden are quietest and choose a room in the older wing for greater c...

In the middle of bustling city an oasis of calm and luxury with touch of history. Come and see the war shelter discovered last year. Good swim in the pool. Elegant rooms. Joan Baez was here 40 years ago recorded sound of war.

Hanoi was the start of my trip to Vietnam in early January 2013. Stayed 3 nights and 1 more after visiting Halong Bay! They serve the best breakfast I have ever experienced ! The bedrooms in the Opera Wing are very comfortable and elegant. The restaurants are also excelent, serving delicious vietnamese food! The Staff were all very polite and welcoming!
Look forward to return one day !
