“Elegance and Luxury”
Reviewed December 28, 2012

We stayed here for two nights at the start of our 19 day tour of Vietnam and Cambodia. It certainly was a classy introduction to Hanoi and Vietnam. The lobby area was very beautiful and the staff immaculately groomed. Our room was very well appointed and comfortable, with very tasteful furnishings.

The breakfast room was also tastefully decorated with a very good selection available from the buffet.

The service in the Bamboo restaurant was especially good, with fast service and great food.

Staying at the Metropole is a must if visiting Hanoi. From the moment of entering the doors the service was excellent. We arrived very early from our flight and the hotel staff took care of us until we could have access to our room. The room was perfect offering all comforts and was very quiet. They booked restaurants, one being Pots and Pans which was fantastic and also got tickets for the Water Puppet show, which we enjoyed.
The location is perfect, very central allowing yo to walk to most museums and the Old Centre which is incredibly hectic and noisy.

We stayed at the Metropole on our short Hanoi holiday. We heard many good reviews through Tripadvisor, and were not disappointed. The staff were very accommodating at our early check in (even 10:30 am); where we simply waited in the restaurant and ordered late breakfast. When we were finished (roughly 11:00); our room was ready.

The staff is excellent, but mostly the history and location, are fabulous.

With kids, get the adjoining rooms in the Opera wing- 181/183 281/283 etc.

Room Tip: Opera wing is the new construction. Metropole wing (i think) is the classic wing of the hotel and o...

Apologies for the late review!

We stayed at the Sofitel Legend Metropole for 3 nights in March/April 2012. It was my boyfriends 30th birthday so this was our first stop on our Vietnam/Cambodia tour.

Room:
Our room was in the new Opera Wing, it had everything that was required, was perfectly clean and decorated beautifully. The only negative I have about the room was unfortunately our view was of a derelict building – this was a little disappointing as we were celebrating my Boyfriends 30th and I had requested a ‘room with a view’ (i know this was only a request but would have liked to have been told they were unable to accommodate before we checked in). On reflection I would definitely pay extra and stay in the old wing if we were to return.

Location;
The location of the hotel was great for us, 5 minute walk to the old quarter (if you can get across the roads!!). We also used the hotel as a base for going to Halong Bay, I got the impression a lot of the other tourists staying at the hotel did the same.

Food:
We ate in the French Le Bealieu Restaurant, Spices garden restaurant and the bar by the pool (unsure what it was called). All were brilliant.

Our favourite was Le Beaulieu – Breakfast was gorgeous with a huge variety including the most divine French pastries.
We also had Dinner here one night for my boyfriends birthday and to celebrate our engagement (he asked me to marry him on a junk boat in Halong Bay). The food was great, we did have a slight hiccups with the meal as they forgot our starters but still was a lovely experience.

We had the most amazing cocktails at the pool bar…………you have to try these!

Facilities:
We attempted to sit by the pool on a number of occasions but were unable to because there was no space to sit on a sun lounger or in the bar (there seemed to be a lot of local business men who came to the hotel to drink/entertain – taking up most of the seating area) So if you are coming to the Sofitel Metropole to relax by the pool/bar in my opinion this isn’t the hotel for you!

Additional info:
Outside the hotel is a small square with a monument in the centre, every day there seemed to be 20 brides and grooms at any one time having photos – this was great to sit and watch, especially the bridal parties arriving on scooters!

We had a superb time at the Sofitel Metropole and would definitely recommend!

Dear Guest,

We were very delighted to welcoming you and your boyfriend on his 30th birthday celebration. This is such a special occasion that we had to pamper both of you all the way!

We were extremely proud to hear about how you enjoyed your stay with us. Your comment on the room view facing the next building is under reviewing with our neighbouring office and we hope to be able to address this issue quickly.

Thank you for recommending our hotel to future travellers and we look forward to welcoming you back.

I stayed for two nights at the Metropole on a business trip. This is the grand old lady of the Hanoi hotel scene with a long history, elegant decor and old world charm coupled with good service and rooms with all the modern amenities.

The rooms are a little tight but well furnished with comfortable beds, practical working desks with all the connections, a good size flat screen TV and an elegant bathroom, albeit again a little small.

We used the hotel's meeting rooms in the club lounge area and they were well furnished and suitably private. The catering for our business meetings was high quality as was my visit to the french restaurant for breakfast. The hotel has a number of other restaurants and bars each with their own personality so there is good selection on hand.

Between the two wings of the hotel there is a nice garden for a stroll and a pool which although small would have been a nice place to park myself if I had the time...

All in all highly recommended for business and I imagine would also be a nice place to stay on holiday

We moved from an excellent little boutique hotel, the Meracus, in the old quarter to join a group trip for travelling and found that the move to the Metropole was a retrograde step. No walk in shower only an over bath shower, the grouting stained with mould. There was no daily fruit bowl all of which the little boutique hotel did have at a fraction of the cost of the Metropole.
Finally we had the worst meal of our trip in the Spices Garden resturant it cost £60 which for Hanoi is a huge amount to spend on a meal.
There are other resturants in the hotel but following that experience we did not try them.
Overall we were disappointed and feel this hotel does not deserve its 5 star rating
