We were skeptical that Essence could live up the hype on TripAdvisor but our family enjoyed it so much we went back again. Vietnamese food is excellent! Definitely try the bun cha! We are sorry we didn't eat more bun cha in Hanoi because after we left, we couldn't find it in other parts of Vietnam.

We had the great fortune to stay at the Essence Hotel and during our stay we dined at the Essence Restaurant frequently (although we did try 3 or 4 of the other Trip Advisor top ranked restaurants as well). Without exception the food, ambiance, and service were superior at the Essence. Not only was there a nice selection of dishes, the food was fresh and perfectly (and quickly) prepared. We also enjoyed the friendly and professional service and the warmth of the staff. It was like having a great meal in your home, that is if your Mom is a gourmet Vietnamese chef!

We were staying at the Essence Hotel so ate at the restaurant several times. We enjoyed every meal and every dish.

There is a wide selection of Vietnamese dishes - spring rolls, soups, beef la lot, Vietnamese pancakes and more. The pumpkin soup is fabulous. All the dishes are affordable - around $7 USD - and good sized portions.

The atmosphere is a calm escape from the hectic street outside. The decor borders on generic hotel design, but it is very comfortable and spotlessly clean. The location is very central to the Old Quarter.

The staff are tremendously friendly. They really made the restaurant. They are eager to please. They seem truly proud of the cuisine and are happy to explain the dishes and how to eat them.

The menu also has a good selection of Western dishes. We only tried the Vietnamese so can't vouch for the Western food.

The restaurant was often very busy so reservations are recommended.

We had a really nice dinner at Essence with our group of friends. The place is not very big, so better to book your table in advance. The atmosphere is nice, the staff very kind, attentive and smiling. We all tried different specialities and all were really tasty! I recommand Essence if you are in Hanoi

Had a very nice dinner here, good selection great service and very tasty. Maybe a bit pricey for what your getting bit still reasonable for sure. Cocktails were so so, and dessert was unfortunately a low point of the meal.

It was a good dinner at a reasonable price and we certainly weren't disappointed overall. I wouldn't say it was our number one restaurant in Hanoi though. For that try Little black duck around the corner it far exceeded our dinner here and if you can only choose one I'd suggest LBD for sure. But you can see my review of them on their page.
