Hanoi is wonderful but after a couple hours rambling in the Old Quarter in high heat and humidity amidst the chaos of the motorbikes we looked for a lunch/air-con escape and spotted the Essence Hotel had a cafe/restaurant attached. Ok, it's not doing the authentic 'eat-on-the-street-like-the-locals' thing but it was very inviting from where we stood at the time! It's not the cheapest option around by any means but the food is still great value. Our bill came to USD$50 including a 10% tip but $26 went on a bottle of badly needed cool white wine! The experience was first class however. Cold towels on arrival were a godsend! Our waitress was the most pleasant person we met on our entire trip and couldn't have been more attentive yet without being over intrusive. The food was fabulous - we stayed for over 2 hours and had full starters and mains and coffees in the end even though we only intended an hour long lunch break. We were ready to tackle another ramble around town afterwards feeling fully refreshed. I recommend the place highly - ok, it's not the cheapest option but it's certainly a welcome escape for an hour or two!
