“Wonderful lunch escape from Old Quarter mayhem!”
Reviewed August 6, 2013

Hanoi is wonderful but after a couple hours rambling in the Old Quarter in high heat and humidity amidst the chaos of the motorbikes we looked for a lunch/air-con escape and spotted the Essence Hotel had a cafe/restaurant attached. Ok, it's not doing the authentic 'eat-on-the-street-like-the-locals' thing but it was very inviting from where we stood at the time! It's not the cheapest option around by any means but the food is still great value. Our bill came to USD$50 including a 10% tip but $26 went on a bottle of badly needed cool white wine! The experience was first class however. Cold towels on arrival were a godsend! Our waitress was the most pleasant person we met on our entire trip and couldn't have been more attentive yet without being over intrusive. The food was fabulous - we stayed for over 2 hours and had full starters and mains and coffees in the end even though we only intended an hour long lunch break. We were ready to tackle another ramble around town afterwards feeling fully refreshed. I recommend the place highly - ok, it's not the cheapest option but it's certainly a welcome escape for an hour or two!

“Excellent Food!”
Reviewed August 6, 2013

I am a great foodie and am immensely impressed by what Essence Cafe & Restaurant had to offer! The food is of very good quality, something that was much beyond what I expected. Everything was so fresh that my partner and I felt like helping ourselves to more and more. I can’t just forget the wonderful taste of the lamb chops that seemed to melt in my mouth. Be it the starters or the main course, everything was so up to the mark!

We had breakfast on 2 mornings and and an evening meal. Very busy and we had to book for the Friday night. Worth waiting for as our meal was fabulous, presentation exceptional and very reasonably priced. Staff were very good.

“Luxury”
Reviewed August 4, 2013

Swanky and pricey (from a student's point of view) I very much feel I got what I paid for. A delicious meal, served in good time with great service from the staff who even deigned to help us improve our woeful Vietnamese. Arrive early if you don't have a reservation. Definitely book ahead if you intend to dine with a larger group.

“A-M-A-Z-I-N-G!!”
Reviewed August 3, 2013

Absolutely loved this place. If you have just one night in Hanoi- consider dinner here, although its more on the pricier side.
It's set in a hotel and seems quite unassuming from the outside. We did not make a reservation and they seated us in a private little alcove which was very nice.
The service was great, the restaurant was very clean and the staff were friendly with very very good english. The cocktails were well made. We ordered the Hanoi spring rolls and the noodle rolls and both were probably among the best we had in three weeks in vietnam. The bamboo beef was very flavourful and delicious. The beef pho had a large quantity of beef and overall taste was fair. The creme brûlée was delicious as was the pineapple crepe.
If we had more time in Hanoi, we would definitely have considered going back.
