I stayed in the Hang Gai branch of this hotel as part of a Vietnam tour arranged by Diethelm tours, along with my wife and 5 year old daughter. The actual hotel is very convenient and you can step right out into the gritty, characterful life of Hanoi at a moments notice. The lobby is clean and sharp, and the reception staff and bell-boys were friendly and helpful. After we checked out we came back two days later and they looked after our luggage there while we spent a few more hours exploring; no problem. The room was small, but that is inevitable for places around this part of town. They put in a fold up bed for our daughter which was comfy but made things cramped. Overall it would be perfectly suited to a couple, less so for a small family, however it was better than paying for two rooms so that is not a serious complaint. Bathroom very nice, water pressure good, place very clean. Breakfast fine and staff fast and attentive, though coffee a bit rough (considering coffee is normally excellent in Vietnam). My only real complaint was that the Glass on the desk had been cracked across and a piece cut my daughter's finger (not good).
Overall we thought this hotel was stylish, convenient and friendly.

This Hotel actually has three branches in the City and we stayed at two of them as we came and went on side trips, one on Hang Gai and the other at Hang Ca. The hotels are relatively small possibly, lovely friendly and informative staff all of whom spoke English. In fact although this was not the swankiest hotel we've ever stayed nor had the best views. We would say that this was probably the nicest time we have ever had in a hotel anywhere in the world

We stayed in Church boutique hotel hang gai during chinese new year .It is a well priced hotel and conveniently located just 2 min walking distance from the hoam kien lake and the water puppet theatre. The staff was very helpful and cheerful -they were able to organise a taxi from the airport for $20-for a 4 seater cab.The rooms are compact but very neat and clean. We got upgraded to a deluxe room at no extra charge as we needed an extra bed in the room for our child. The buffet breakfast was good with enough variety with the pho being the best I had in hanoi. The staff was helpful in finding us places to eat and in giving us directions. All the street shopping places (shoes lane, toys lane etc)are within a few minutes walking distance from here-only advice is avoid going during CNY as all shops are closed at least for the first 5 days of their holiday period including some restaurants too.

We stayed here in May last year, but I've only recently started posting reviews on Tripadvisor - hence the delay. We thought this was a great boutique option, we opted for a suite, which was very reasonably priced in comparison to some of the larger hotel chains in Hanoi, it had a lovely balcony and you could see across the old quarter, there was also a nice dressing area and comfy beds. My only criticism would be the glass doors on the bathroom, my husband and I have been together for 13 years but we still like a little bit of privacy! There was a good choice for breakfast and very friendly staff, we also used the airport pick up/drop off which was good value as the airport is quite away out of the centre.

Room Tip: The suites are very good value and come with a great balcony

Overall, a good value hotel in a wondeful location in Hanoi if you book the right room. Some of the rooms have no windows, external lighting or even TVs. This was the case for a "Classic Room" booked for us through Indochina Travel. My family stayed there from 3 to 5 , and then again on 8 to 10 January 2013. My daughter quietly spent three nights in Room 202 on the first stay and quietly endured the darkened atmosphere (not at all in line with the Indochina Travel description of "“each well appointed room has plenty of natural light"!). Better rooms on the second visit with at least a window, but this could not be opened and there were no double rooms available (although it had been booked) so my wife and I had a twin room. Overall, service was good (although we did ask for an upgrade for our second stay which seemed to get lost). Offered an upgrade and dinner once travel agent informed on fifth day, but all a bit late. Breakfast was enjoyable especially once we found the Pho. Location for the shopping in Hang Gai was terrific and still close to the lake.

Room Tip: Just get the right room - not the "classic". And certainly not Room 202. The suites are...

We had booked and pre-paid for a room at Church Boutique Hang Gai weeks before our arrival, so we didn't think it would be a problem if we checked in at 5pm on our intended date. Apparently, it was. Without offering an apology or giving any clear reason why, the male receptionist told us that occupancy was already 100% so instead they got us a room at their other branch on Hang Ca street. The reason we booked Hang Gai was its proximity to Hoan Kiem lake and because all the nice shops are right outside the doorstep. The lobby is big, with a stunning chandelier lighting up the place. From the outside as well as the inside, it looks really nice.

The hotel we were moved to on Hang Ca was a complete contrast. It's where boutique hotels come to die. We were surrounded by hardware stores and bike repair shops. The lobby was small and the service was surly. The room was so warm we almost had to sleep in the nude. And we had to take a cab to get to anywhere. It's disappointing how hoteliers put so much money on facade and interiors but forget the most important thing in the hospitality industry: good service.

Room Tip: There's no swimming pool or fitness centre. Poor location.

hkh hospitality e, Manager at Church Boutique Hotel Hang Gai, responded to this reviewResponded February 5, 2013

Dear Ms. XiaoYun Tan,

First of all, on behalf of Church Boutique Hotels we thank you very much for your review. Once again we so sorry for any inconveniences have happened during your stay related the transfer from Church Boutique Hang Gai to Church Boutique Hang Ca.

But actually we have to say that this review is offensive to our hotel's prestige and honor.
We built and finished these 2 properties in the same period, each of them has its all advantage and disadvantage. We always proud of Hang Ca even it's smaller then Hang Gai, but the location exactly Old quarter. Maybe Hang Ca is not your style but so many guests love it a lot with what it have, you could check this by the reviews from other guests on TripAdvisor.

With the Old Quarter specific characteristics, it will be very difficult for you to find out a hotel have a swimming pool and gym. We sorry for what we don't have make you unhappy, but we have never ever advertised that these above services available in our hotel.
You checked in around 6pm on January 21st and left to the airport at 7am next day January 22nd. So except 6 hours sleeping, where could you visit during 4 hours night time that you said have to take cab to get to anywhere? It takes a traveler 10 minutes to walk from Hang Ca to Hoan Kiem lake, I don't think that this a big distance to anyone.
On the date you've stayed, the weather in Hanoi quiet cool: 17oC-19oC. The room you've stayed is Deluxe room with a balcony. Furthermore on that date we're fully booked in Hang Ca, so if the rooms too hot we'll have a lot of complaints, but it seem like you were the only one upset about this.

We always look in any comments as a great support to our hotels, yet any negative experience delivers us the opportunity to look at our services and products in order to be better. But the righteousness and sincere comments from guests also very necessary and important for any hotels.

We hope to welcome you back to Church Boutique Hotels whenever you are in Ha Noi.

Your sincerely,

Pauline Thanh Do

We stayed in the Hang Gai right in the middle of the Old Quarter with great staff, we enjoyed our stay here. A bathroom leak through the roof from the floor above was dealt with quickly and without fuss. The breakfast was high quality and yet remained intimate enough to feel unhurried.
