This small hotel can only be a 3 stars hotel. We stayed in a luxury suite with balcony therefore quite spacious and nicely decorated. The terrace was quite adequate but dirty so didn't go out much at all. The room wasn't clean. The bed sheet was old with holes and used dirty bath towels in the bath room. The shower leaked and made the floor outside slippery. Its dangerous. How can they call this a boutique hotel? The window in the toilet open into the internal staircase area.

Our plan was to stay in this hotel for two nights and then a cruise in Halong Bay for two nights and back to stay one more night before we flew to Hong Kong. They never told us we had to pay for the first two nights before we depart for Halong Bay until the taxi arrived and waited for us. Then they demanded the payment as it their rules. They should have mentioned that to me either in email or the day before. It ended up that the taxis waited for us outside on an extremely busy street for another 15minutes and caused us delay. The taxi driver wasn't happy. He had to overtake other vehicles all the time in order to get us to Halong Bay before the cruise boat departed. We were not happy about that as they held all our luggages

The restaurant was quite small but good enough for breakfast. We never drank in the bar area as it didn't attract us to go in.

The worst thing was the manager proposed a late check out at 3:00pm for us on the last day and that led to us booking this hotel in March. But the receptionist and customer service staff wanted us out at 12:00pm as now they needed the room back. We argued for a long time about the late check out promise and even checked the email correspondence. Then they said they wanted to charge us as it didn't say its free. I said if its not free it should have been clearly stated how much prior to my booking. Actually I won't even book this hotel as our flight was at 8:00pm in the evening. The argument really made us upset and spoiled our holiday. Only when we threatened we won't pay the last night then suddenly the room was OK for us to stay longer.
When we stayed in 5stars Grand Hyatt in Macau a week later and they promised late check out at 4:00pm. They honored it and never even mention charge. That the difference in class.

Given all the troubles we had we definitely will not stay here again. Will try Silk path or 5stars Sofitel Plaza next time as they cost about the same.

Room Tip: Avoid rooms without window. There is no swimming pool , gym or free spa.

Located along Hang Gai street aka Silk road, this hotel makes my stay in hanoi a very smooth one. It is quite near to all the smaller streets of old quarters and short walking distance to the lake.

We took the studio suite upon doing our research, only suites come with windows and balcony (for smokers) so we do not mind paying slightly more.

Room is beautiful, clean, spacious. Strong Wifi and decent selection of TV channels. Breakfast is quite good with the basics and they rotate some of the selection on alternate days. There is even passion fruit on the selection.

We got them to arrange everything for us: from the airport transfers, to the 2 days 1 night cruise at Halong Bay in between, and helping us to make dinner arrangements at the places we want to dine in with no hiccups.

Special thanks to Victor, GM of the hotel, for making sure everything is fine and to Lee, for being so helpful and attentive. The rest of the staffs are friendly too.

Room Tip: Choose suites for the windows. As they face the street, be prepared for all the noise from the traffic. (the cars/bikes horn a lot in Vietnam)

After having to re route, via Singapore due to Typhoons in Hong Kong we finally arrived in Hanoi, very tired. Our flight from Saigon had been delayed so our driver had left. A quick call to the hotel and before we knew it the driver was there. Upon arrival at the hotel we had staff all fussing over us ensuring a very smooth transition from checking in to our room, which we found out was an upgraded room as the manager wanted to get us settled in and resting.
The front desk staff recommended eateries and places of interest which we found to be spot on, and the location in the Old Quarter was sensational.
We also did a Ha Long Bay Cruise that the hotel had organised for us and everything from pick up, the Boat and drop off were excellent and was floorless.
One more night at Golden Silk on our return from the cruise was just the perfect end to our Hanoi holiday. The breakfasts were very good and catered for all tastes.
Very special thanks to Mr Victor Seow and all his staff for organising our cruise, and for looking after us as if we were the only guests in the hotel.
We could not recommend this hotel highly enough to any visitor to Hanoi.
We will most definitely be returning to Hanoi andwe could not go anywhere else but Golden Silk Hotel.

Room Tip: Cant go past the Studio rooms with balcony, or above.

Emily C, General Manager at Golden Silk Boutique Hotel, responded to this reviewResponded October 31, 2013

Dear Valued Client,

We do sincerely apologize for the noise created due to the construction of the building across the road from our hotel. Steps are taken to inform them not to start early in the morning and heavy construction works can only begin at from 0800am to 6.00 pm ONLY. We hope that this will be effective and our front view guests will not experience this undesirable noises. On our part, we are very sorry to let you suffer this unbearable noise pollution.

For your information, all our front view rooms/suites are equipped with (EUROWINDOW) double glazed glass doors/windows to prevent noise pollution and if properly shut, there should be no noise at all. However, this was not the case.

In regard to the floors’ grubby corners, we believe it is in the terrace and we are sorry for not treating this to ensure of cleanliness and housekeeping staff has been reprimanded.

The tea/coffee are replenished only when the maid cleans the room/s and in this case it is between noon – 3 or 4pm. If you had needed these earlier than the cleaning times, we could fulfill this request if you have called our front office or room service?

As we endeavor to excel towards that “elusive excellence” we do sometimes fall short in matters such as these.
Once again our sincere apologies and if you do visit Hanoi again, please be our guest?

Best regards
Victor Seow
General Manager

Centrally located in Old Hanoi in the Silk district, this was our first time in Vietnam and the Golden Silk was a great introduction. The hotel is almost new and while it doesn't look like much from the street it was very nice inside. We booked four consecutive nights then made arrangements for side trips so ended up breaking it up. We got a room upgrade the second time. We had a problem with our safe and staff were there to fix it in five minutes- literally. Staff were all excellent. Breakfast was good also.

Room Tip: The quiet rooms are small and probably no window. The rooms at the front were larger but noisier. They are all nice rooms with large beds and I liked the soaker tubs.
