“It's not 'Boutique' - it's just average”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 22, 2013

Now I struggled with this review of this hotel. The clue in the problem is in the name and the expectation (European, I grant you) that this hotel would offer something different that come with the 'boutique' label. It didnt. It is pretty bland as hotels go and beware - not many of the rooms have windows (which is like a double edged sword as those which dont tend to be quieter from the incessant noise of the traffic outside). The rooms were clean and well appointed - although the bathrooms are separated by a misted glass partition which protects privacy but little else. The staff are efficient but not really that friendly and the breakfast was mediocre and cramped in the little restaurant. OK as a base for a few days in Hanoi - but I would not recommend and would not return.

A small point - the doors slam VERY hard and loudly which if you have inconsiderate other guests (as we did on our floor) does prove a problem.

Room Tip: If you want a room with a window you have to pay for it.

Dear Valued Guest

It is a pleasure to read your Trip Advisor reviews on various matters.
As we search for that elusive “Excellence” in the hotel & hospitality industry, we are sometimes prevented from reaching that goal by several factors and a few of those factors are mentioned in your review.
As we kindled to answer your review – the most important for hotels who specify “a boutique hotel”Is outlined below:
What exactly is a Boutique Hotel – well this question can be answered in many ways but one of the main answer is:
See website www.streetdirectory.com and as written by: Kobrun Vidisdottir
“In recent years, boutique hotels have emerged as the most liked guest accommodation all over the world. But the ironic fact here is that no one exactly knows what is the real meaning of the term 'boutique' or why this term is used in connection with hotels and what are the benefits of staying in this type of hotels.
BUT most of the hoteliers do not fulfill the obligations on “qualities or what characteristics” ……….more
Unfortunately and we do apologize, though we fulfill some of the qualities and characteristics, there are shortcomings.

In regard to rooms with windows, we must admit that not all of our rooms have windows, but 50% of our rooms and suites do have wide floor - ceiling windows. When selecting from our website or through other booking companies, we do specify the type of rooms and the availability of windows, including the prices that goes with it.

For a hotel consisting 55 rooms, our restaurant can comfortably sit 56 guests at any one time, thus as far as breakfast is concern, we have not found any time that we ran acute shortage of seats or being “cramped”

All of our toilets and showers are with glass doors. BUT there are screens which can be pulled to cover, for those who needed the privacy and lastly, as for front view suites, we have (since from the start) installed double glazed glass windows and doors and these has to be properly closed to elude the noise from the street. If the windows and doors are properly closed, there will be no noise pollution.

With my best regard,

Victor Seow (Mr)

On arrival it was my wife birthday, they had notice this and on check in gave my wife a Birthday card and chocolates it was a lovely gesture. We stay at this hotel twice during our holiday total of four days, we had two different rooms, first was at the very back of hotel with window over looking rumble from other properties, the room it's self was very clean only problem was having to climb into the bath tub to have shower also water sits on ledge, our second stay the room was in the front with a balcony, however had to keep balcony door closed to much noise otherwise and petrol fumes are bad in Hanoi. The room was similar in size (very big) etc with the acceptation the bathroom had a walk in shower and a bath separated much nicer specially for us older couples.

The breakfast buffet is wonderful choices for Eastern and Western cultures. Hotel staff friendly and don't aspect you to tip them but please do there wages are pretty ordinary $1usd is 20,000 Dong.

Room Tip: If your older couple when booking put this in your request for walk in shower.

Lovely hotel in central Hanoi. If you are familiar with Vietnam you will know that property fronts are narrow, but this hotel goes back a long way. Room did not have a window, but this was not a problem, it was well furnished and suitable for our needs as we only slept there. Great breakfast in the morning, close to many restaurants outside and the major features of Hanoi, staff were lovely and very helpful.

we have travelled over the world - this hotel was not a greatone but ok.
Staff performance is ok and clean places over the hotel, which is neat the lake,
where you can have nice walkings around.
Br very good, you have all what we expected
onlu mispoint is, that the backside rooms have no windows and also
that the voice-isolation was poor.

Overall very disappointed with a hotel that came highly recommended. I pre-paid for two non consecutive nights. The first night I was given a room without a window and the shower leaked all over the bathroom. So my second night I requested a room with a window and was put in one with a window that looked out onto a pot with a wall behind it, still no natural light, the shower leaked there too. The front desk were very unapologetic when the taxi I asked them to book for me to go to the airport and didn’t arrive and were reluctant to call for another one. Don’t be fooled by the plush looking reception!

Room Tip: Request a balcony if you are after natural light, requesting a window doesnt necessarily mean natura...

Dear Polly H,

Thank you for taking your time to share your experience of your staying with us.
We must sincerely apologize for the incidents which occurred during your time here:
1. Rooms with NO outside view – it was clearly stated in Expedia travel that our Deluxe rooms does not have windows which opens to the natural outside? Plus our rooms descriptions clearly stated this! In fact, when you were given another room on the 2nd night, it was a better room (unfortunately) it does not have a window with view.
2. Regarding the taxi which was ordered, it certainly came on time but as there was no parking along the road, the driver had to take a round-about turn (around the block) to avoid the traffic police. But came back to pick you up – 8minutes late to be precise! We are sorry about this delay.
3. We will closely look into your comments about our “unapologetic” receptionists and on behalf of the Management, we do sincerely apologize and hope that these short-comings did not deter your holiday.

Polly H, should you have a plan to return to Hanoi in the future, we hope to see you again at the Golden Silk Boutique Hotel so that we can arrange a nicer room with view and extend the service you expect.

Kind regards,
Hanh Chu

This is one of the prettiest hotels that I have ever stayed in. From the reception area to our room, it was a real delight to the eye. It is actually quite rare for a hotel to achieve a lightness of touch at the same time as glamour in its decor, as the Golden Silk does, with its glowing colour schemes and sumptuous bed backdrops. It is quaint as well, with miniature balconies overlooking the bustle of the street - one of my favourite moments was to nibble the fruit provided by the hotel whilst people-gazing at the scenes below, before retreating to the luxurious haven of the room.

Even better than all this is the friendliness of all the staff who are without exception warm and courteous, from the desk to the dining room. I would like to single out one particular member of staff who organized several travel arrangements for us: Lee (her anglicized name badge) or Vu Thuy Ly (her actual Vietnamese name). This lady is wasted as the Customer Care executive: she could run the United Nations, such is her efficiency, graciousness, tact, attention to detail and work ethic. Lee is a truly wonderful asset for hotel guests; she listens carefully, does the research and delivers the results with a charming smile.

The hotel is well situated for exploring the markets, old quarters and the lake area. I will certainly return on my next trip to Hanoi.

Room Tip: Rooms overlooking the street are my favourite as you can observe the street life from the haven of y...

We booked direct to hotel website for a promotional package for 3 nites hotel & 1 nite Bhaya Classic cruise to Halong Bay.
GS boutique hotel is just like other buildings in Hanoi with rocket or tube house design, tall & narrow. To my surprise, my junior suite is spacious, clean, tastefully design and bed is comfortable. Mini fridge is stocked with free cans of beer & coke.
Location is excellent, is at old quarters with variety of local goods, silk clothes and handicrafts. 5 mins walk to Hoan Kiem lake, restaurants and Water Puppet Shows. 25 mins walking distance or by taxis of 40000 Von (S$ 3) to most highlight like Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum, one pillar pagoda, temple of Literature etc. Breakfast is adequate with both Western and Chinese spread.
Only not so functional is the kettle in the room, need to use a adaptor which could be obtain from the reception.
Staff are friendly and helpful with good spoken English. GM, Mr Victor Seow responded to all my email enquiries promptly. He also goes the extra mile to upgrade our rooms both at GS & Bhaya cruise to make it a happy & memorable 32 wedding anniversary for us. A big kudos to all staff of GS, will definitely stay at yr hotel when we go to Hanoi again.
