“Perfect location and value for money”
Reviewed December 5, 2013

We stayed here for 5 nights in the family suite, the room is cosy, clean and with balcony, is absolutely value for money.
The hotel location is good and convenience, few mins walk to Hoan Kiem Lake, night market and other tourist attractions.
The staffs like Peter, Sally, Lisa, Martin and all (can’t remember all their name specially their Vietnamese name) were very friendly and willing to answer all your inquiry, the service is excellent and is beyond 5 stars.

The staff do make an extra effort here and that makes you want to rate higher but there are real problems with the fabric of the hotel which need addressing.

Good points

Staff service including a service to hold luggage during a tour and also lending a room on return for showering despite not staying that night
Attentive and engaging staff
Breakfast options
Room facilities
Very good central location

Bad points

The drains are a mess and every so often including at night a huge bubble blow back occurred in the toilet emitting unpleasant odours
They attempted to rip us off on airport transfers quoting a very high price and then reducing it when challenged

Room Tip: Don't use their tour service but book direct with an independent company such as Vega Travel. Th...

We booked the honeymoon suite (even though we have been married for 36 years!) as it looked so inviting but I'm pretty sure we didn't get the room that was featured on the web photos.
Also the trek up to the room was a bit , well, unexpected but hey! it's an old hotel and if the stairs up to the room are a bit narrow we got over that.
We were awoken by bell ringing from St Joseph's Cathedral at 4.45 am on the first night but soon fell asleep again.
The sheets had had better days but the bed was the most comfortable of all those we stayed in in Vietnam over two weeks.
The staff could not have been more helpful and really did their best to make us feel welcome and wanted.
There are certainly better hotels than this one but you get what you pay for and on that basis I would say we were very happy - if you are on a bit of a budget this is a good hotel for location and comfort but don't expect elevators and so on - it's a bit of a throwback to how hotels may have been many years ago but saying that it had a kind of quaintness about it.
Would we stay here again? - possibly we would go for something a little more modern (though it would no doubt cost more) but for the money we paid there are certainly no complaints and if you don't occasionally have these little adventures? - it's what like's all about isn't it?

Room Tip: The honeymoon suite is worth the extra money (not a huge amount more) - the bed's comfort makes...

Okay, we were excited to go to this hotel. The reviews on TA were good, the photos and description on their website were inviting. Then we got there.

Now, this hotel is the kind of place where the service was better than the accommodations. Peter at reception did everything he could to make our stay unforgettable.

The Hotel

The hotel is centrally located in the old quarter. The cathedral across the street is both picturesque and provides a great orientation point to find your hotel at night after a few tiger beers.

The Room

Upon arrival, we were upgraded to the family room on the second floor. The room was well presented if not a little worn looking. There were rose petals on the bed and the room itself was quite spacious. BUT, the room did not look like the website photos.
Also, curiously, there were two balloons stuck to the ceiling which appeared to be remnants of a previous party….these should really have been removed from the room before receiving a new guest.

Our First night

We planned a 2 night stay followed by a trip to Halong Bay followed by another night in the Hotel. The hotel staff were quite accommodating even offering to hold our luggage while we went to Halong Bay.
When we turned off the lights at night the fun started.
My wife eventually started hearing some rustling in the room. The lights were turned on and we were met with a four legged furry extra guest in the room (rat).
I was livid, but at 12:30 at night, the best the staff could do was to get the thing out of the room….where it went from there…I don’t know.
Now I realize that Hanoi is a city of over 1000 years old and that especially in the old quarter there are rodents….but I don’t want them in our hotel room.

Well, that excitement dealt with, and a towel stuffed firmly under the door to prevent the visitor from returning, we fell asleep…..until 5 am!

At 5am that picturesque church across the street decided to call the faithful to mass. The bells rang out for a full minute, without a snooze button anywhere nearby.

The next day, we were promptly moved to one of the sister hotels in the street behind. This hotel was much better. Cleaner, more comfortable, without any noticeable wildlife, and further away from the church bells.

The staff was the best part of the splendid start suite experience. If it were not for them, we would have wandered the streets of Hanoi looking for another hotel. We would, however not stay there again.

That was a great romantic stay we will remember for years. The room was great: clean, spacious and comfortable. The round bed was a good surprise for my girlfriend. The view is outstanding, you almost can touch the Cathedral. Staff is very helpful and polite (as everywhere in Vietnam).
Contras are average breakfast and the absence of lifts: we had to climb to the 5th floor by stairway, but it worth it. You should stay there and listen to the bells of the Cathedral.

Room Tip: Get a room with round bed
