This has all the feel of a western hotel with service that is beyond anything else we've seen in Vietnam and all at budge price ($25-35).
Our room had a desk (including laptop), a sofa bench by the window, and a glass walled shower within the ensuite bathroom. It even had little details like nice reading light by the bed, large closet and a small safe.
The breakfast had egg, baguette and pho options of which you could order multiple and there was always fruit, juice, tea and coffee available for self-serve.
Most importantly, the Tu Linh features the most friendly and helpful staff. At first, they can come across a little strong but it's all out of wanting to make sure they help you make the most of your stay. With Sapa and Halong Bay both being stunning side-trips from Hanoi, it really helps to have someone you can trust to help you with the arrangements.
My wife and I are DIY travellers and initially rejected their offers to arrange our Sapa & Halong Bay trips. We went down to the train station to book our Sapa train tickets ourselves, waited in line, only to find out that the night trains to Sapa were fully booked because of Vietnamese holidays. Somewhat defeated, we headed back to the Tu Linh where Tim at the front desk spent an hour with us calling various companies that might have tickets and ultimately helped us rework our itinerary to get us on soft sleeper trains.
We travelled to Sapa without a pre-booked trek but did use one of Tu Linh's Halong Bay options: Fantasea Cruises. We had heard quality concerns about Halong Bay cruises but Tim reassured us about Fantasea and was willing to stake the reputation of the Tu Linh on it. Accepting that Fantasea is not a luxury cruise, everything was great and well run. The boat was nice and the food was fantastic.
With all of this I would highly recommend a stay at the Tu Linh Palace.
