This boutique style hotel sits in the middle of the old quarter in Hanoi. Outside the streets are busy with everyday life but inside it's calm and comfortable. The hotel's position has to be its biggest selling point - a short walk to lots of restaurants, shops, theatre, the lake and other sightseeing attractions.
The rooms I had (805 & 806) were on the top floor at the back. They were quiet, clean and comfortable (including the bed). Both had the shower in the bath setup with good water pressure and plenty of hot water. There were plenty of power points to use, air-conditioning was good and there were large windows looking out over the rooftops.
The staff in the hotel were efficient, warm and friendly making sure your needs were met. The car I arranged for pickup was waiting for me on my arrival with no issue and tickets for the local theatre arranged easily. The main points about the hotel however that make it standout were the lovely restaurant onsite, food and service great and the handy ATM at the door.
All in all a great experience for a reasonable price.

Room Tip: Go for the deluxe rooms.

Only stayed here for one evening whilst passing through Vietnam and had no grumbles!

The room was clean and the bed was very comfortable.

All staff were friendly and helpful and breakfast in the morning was varied and good quality.

Only minor issue was having a loud family in the room above us stomping around at five in the morning. This same uncouth family was also then at breakfast acting in an unruly slobbish manner. This however was not the hotels fault.

The location is perfect for walking round town, however walking round Hanoi should come with a health warning as crossing the road involved taking your life into your own hands!

This hotel is lovely, small but big enough, service exemplary and the restaurant exceptional. We paid $145 per night but got 2 adjoining rooms for that price. We actually got the "tomb like" rooms (as described by a previous reviewer) at the far end of the back side of the building. I can understand why they might be disappointed if they were wanting a picture window etc. but we found these rooms a welcome reprieve from the hustle out on the streets and were more than happy to have such a retreat. The rooms on the front side of the building were a little more opulently furnished and had much more light, it just depends what you are after.
The only complaint I would have was there was quite a bit of noise from above the rooms on the 6th floor. Perhaps management could address this?

The staff really helped boost the experience here and there seems to be a genuine warmth that we haven't experienced elsewhere in Vietnam. I hope that management and the owners appreciate your staff and reward them accordingly. The team you have on hand at the moment should be nurtured and encouraged as they are an integral part of the magic you currently have at your hotel.

Don't just use the restaurant just for breakfast, which in itself is very good, as the dinner menu is also brilliant and not that much more expensive than eating out on the street with the locals. In fact it was cheaper than some of the sit down restaurants.

The rooms are very clean, the staff wonderful and the location straight into the crazy old quarter streets couldn't be better. Really enjoyed our stay and it deserves to be No. 1 in the trip advisor rankings. Highly recommended.

Room Tip: Want a view and light request the front of the building, need sleep and solace go for the back corne...

We're used to paying a lot of money in Australia for holiday accommodation, so used to it in fact that we were worried about paying just $60/night for a room - so we paid just over $100 for the suite, but were still worried even given the fantastic reviews on TripAdvisor.
We were collected from the airport for less than $20, which given the distance & time (38km & an hour!!) was fantastic value and arrived at the hotel to a welcome drink.
We were taken to our room which consisted of a living room and a separate bedroom with a clean, well appointed bathroom. There was a basket of fruit, basket of sweet treats, minibar with beers & soft drinks and a bottle of wine - all complimentary & replenished each day. There was a laptop connected to the internet & a tv in each room. The rooms were spotless, newly furnished & adequate in size.
The restaurant on the ground floor was great & very good value - the staff in the hotel were always more than helpful.
You must stay at this hotel in Hanoi, it is simply the best.

Gripes, hmmmmmmm, the bed squeaked & it would have been nice if the restaurant had a proper bar & bar area to sit at as we would have loved to spent more time in the public areas.

Room Tip: Book the suite. You get a living room & bedroom, free beer, soft drinks & water in the mini...

My boyfriend and I flew into Hanoi for summer vacation in September 2012. The Essence Hotel was one of the best choices we have ever made (and we have been to numerous hotels in the past). We arrived in a city hotel but felt like we had landed in a luxury resort in terms of the service. We stayed in 2 other hotels in Vietnam that week but Essence was by far the best.

It started with the advance email communications which was always prompt, in fluent English and courteous. The concierge ensured we were picked up at the airport and brought safely to our hotel which was great given that we arrived pretty late at night.

We checked out to travel to Hoi An, and came back to Hanoi a few days later but had to stay at another hotel as Essence was booked -- but the Essence still provided airport transfer (albeit for a fee). Since the airport is far and we didn't speak the language, it was a huge relief to see friendly faces. We were even late at one point to head to the airport and our driver made sure we made our flight.

Other than that, the rooms are clean, very stylish with just enough Asian flair, soft lighting, nice windows to let in light and air, and a bathroom that isn't huge but just big enough for 1. (As opposed to some hotels which only have tiny bathrooms with no tub or no shower). Beds and linens are comfortable as well. All the amenities are in place, nothing missing there.

Elevators are small but quick and efficient.

We later discovered that the restaurant here is quite famous in the area; we actually ventured out about 15 min by taxi where the food was not great and we had uninvited guests by our table (the creepy crawly kind) and deeply regretted not dining at our hotel! We did however manage to grab some spring rolls which were absolutely scrumptious. The fresh fruit smoothies were also great; I am sure the prices are high by local standards, but I assure you the cost performance is ridiculous here. For what you would pay for a 3-star motel in the US or Western Europe, you get 5-star hospitality and a gourmet Vietnamese dining experience.

Room Tip: Ask for a room that is on a higher floor so you are looking over the neighboring roofs, instead of i...

My wife, daughter and I recently stayed at The Essence. We flew into Vietnam, spent 4 nights in Hanoi, caught the train to Sapa, returned to Hanoi, spent two nights on Halong Bay and back to Hanoi before traveling south. Essence organised all of our train tickets, escorted us to our carriages, picked us up from the train, organised or Halong Bay tour, helped get mobile phone cards, organised cheap laundry and advised on anything else. An absolutely stunning stay. They even provided a shower and place to repack bags between legs of the journey even though we did not stay the night. And they new our name every time we walked in. Can't recommend highly enough.

It was more than I expected from a hotel in Vietnam. The location is a pretty good one since it is very accessible to the main street, the Vietnam neighborhood and the people. The hotel itself was very modern in the Eastern sense. It was clean, comfortable and welcoming. We had welcome drinks when we got to the hotel. The transfers from the airport was flawless. What I like about the hotel set-up are the details that make up the big parts, like a fruit basket or a flower on the bath towels, and even the carved fruits that they have on the breakfast buffet table. Speaking of breakfast, the presentation was quite luxurious, as I said I didn't expect it to be as nice as that, but I'm not complaining. Excellent staff who were very welcoming and warm. They knew what to do from the beginning. They know their business and I like places like that. Definitely coming back.
