“First Rate Boutique hotel”

We booked a junior suite and requested a quiet room. However we were allocated room 305 and we could hear talking in the street in addition to traffic noise. We asked if we could be moved to a higher floor and the following day we moved to a room on the 6th floor and this was much better. This was the only negative aspect of our stay. We found all the staff to be very friendly and helpful. The modern room was exceptionally clean and we appreciated the free internet with the provision of a laptop. The breakfast was very good (excellent banana pancakes to order). We also enjoyed a very nice meal in the restaurant in the evening.

The Essence and its staff is number 1 plus! You can't go wrong with this hotel if you want to be in the Old Quarter of Hanoi. Service is their priority and each and every employee went out of their way to make our visit special. When the frame of my sunglasses cracked the night before our Ha Long Bay trip and I asked for tape to fix it, they sent someone out to get glue and brought the repaired glasses to my room. To date they are still fine. That is unusual service. We spent three nights and returned for a fourth after an overnight on Ha Long Bay. The hotel stored our suitcases while we were gone. Other reviewers have covered everything quite well. I would also suggest that you underline the name and address of this hotel on their card, since the sister hotels are also listed and the print is hard to read, especially in the evening light. In addition to the printed map, the staff was good about drawing a map for us to use to walk places which we like to do. The lake, water puppets, and other sights are all close and easy to find with good directions. I loved Vietnam. The Essence Hotel and its staff were the beginning of a wonderful experience.

Room Tip: Stayed in two different ones. Both were good, but the one two floors higher, but on the same side h...

This boutique hotel is perfectly located, just a few minutes’ walk from the Hoan Kiem Lake. The room was spacious and comfortable and the buffet breakfast was varied and delicious. There is also a real attention to detail as shown by the small touches like the flowers on the bed and the hand-made garnishes on the breakfast dishes.
If we had to pick one thing that really sets this hotel apart it is service. The staff was uniformly excellent and did everything to make us feel welcome from the moment they greeted us on our arrival (and sat with us to explain the hotel and about Hanoi) until, regretfully, we had to check out.
We will definitely stay there again when we are next in Hanoi.

Room Tip: The Junior Suites are spacious, include a free mini-bar and laundry and are well worth the extra.

The level of warmth and professionalism exhibited by Mrs Pham Thi Tam and the team at the Essence was outstanding. Nothing was too much trouble and we felt so at home. We have travelled extensively though Asia and whilst the service is often first class it does not meet the bar The Essence has set.

Extra services such as the very reasonably priced laundry were very useful. The Cafe was also lovely and served delicious local food with a twist (see separate review).

We stayed for 2 nights, went to Halong Bay for a night then came back for a final night at the Essence. On our final night we were upgraded to a Junior Suite which was really spacious and is highly recommended. The first room we had was really nice but was a little on the small side (as expected).

If we are ever in Hanoi again we would stay at the Essence and would eat at the Cafe.

Room Tip: I would upgrade to a junior suite for the additional space.

We were a group of 8 travelling through Vietnam in December and January. While in Hanoi, we stayed at the Essence and absolutely loved everything about it.
The Essence Cafe is wonderful, the rooms are modern, spacious and impeccably clean and the location is fabulous. But by far the outstanding feature of this hotel is the wonderful staff. We loved the Receptionists who seemed to remember us each time we arrived or departed! We loved the waitresses and waiters who loved speaking English with us in the Cafe, where nothing was too much trouble. We loved the amazing service provided by the charming young men at the front door.
All in all, a wonderful experience and testament to well run establishment.

The Essence Hanoi Hotel is centrally located, serving as a convenient base from which to explore Hanoi on foot. It deserves the praise and accolades that it has received from other reviewers. For a hotel of this size, it deserves a five-star rating and would put many other grander hotels to shame.

Note that the Essence Hanoi Hotel is part of the Hanoi Elegance hotel chain with other hotels in the city center. You might want to note and keep with you its full address and telephone number. If you intend taking a taxi, print a map as well showing the location of the hotel and the preceding details. It will help the driver.

Before leaving, we arranged by e-mail directly with the hotel to have them pick up us at the airport. The response was prompt, efficient and precise. For the convenience and comfort, we thought the charge of US$18 reasonable for a four-seat van. The hotel vehicle which collected us was large enough for one or two additional passengers.

As arranged, a driver displaying a placard with the name given in our reservation waited for us as we emerged from customs at the airport (about 28 miles (45 km) from the city center). The drive to the hotel takes about 40-50 minutes — depending on traffic, especially as one nears the center and encounters congestion.

While staff arranged our check-in (they have official paperwork to organize), a waiter brought us tea, which we definitely appreciated. In the meantime, someone took our bags to the room. The clerk at reception then took us to the room. As we had requested, he gave us the type of room that we prefer and works well for us.

The hotel building is on a narrow street, crowded with people, motorcycles, shops, bars, restaurants and activity: it really is in the middle of everything. However, once you enter the hotel lobby, it is almost like stepping into another world. The interior is peaceful, and all the pandemonium remains outside.

Our spacious, comfortable, well-appointed and maintained room was on the sixth floor. Seven floors are served by the lift-elevator. The eighth (top) floor is reached from the seventh by a flight of stairs.

The building is perpendicular to the street, so the rooms are behind and away from the street in front. Also, at one side there is a higher building fronting and running parallel to the street. This building effectively blocks any street noise from rooms on that side of the hotel. Also, the bedroom had double-glazed windows which further blocked city noise; two window panels were openable. We had a view over city rooftops into the distance. Lower floors would have faced neighboring buildings. The windows had privacy and room-darkening curtains.

Awaiting us was a welcome package of a small basket of fruit and a bottle of white wine. Housekeeping was reliable, thorough and efficient. We especially appreciated their replacing the fruit, and the Essence Hotel bottled water, as part of the normal daily servicing of the room.

The spacious room was comfortably furnished with a round table and chair, fixed luggage rack, long work counter and standing clothes rack. The free floor space was more than adequate to open a full-size suitcase.

On either side of the king-size bed was a side table with a reading lamp attached to the wall, and a sofa at the foot of the bed. The mattress was firm but comfortable and the pillows soft but supporting. One side had a telephone and the other an alarm clock. The large closet contained ample hanging space and hangers, a torch-flashlight, a safe large enough for a small laptop and two pairs of slippers.

On the counter were a table lamp, an Acer laptop computer with a reliable, high-speed connection (ask reception for the access password), flat screen TV and DVD player, basket of snack foods at very reasonable prices and free coffee-tea making facilities. Underneath the counter was a chair and a small bar fridge with drinks for purchase, again at reasonable prices. We could not find a thermostat in the fridge; it hardly cooled the contents perhaps because it was totally enclosed when the cabinet door was closed.

The TV had about 30 channels, several in English, but also the odd one in French, German, Russian, Korean and Japanese. The remotely controlled room air conditioner worked well.

The bathroom had a full bath-shower. The window was single-glazed with an exhaust vent. Provided was a full complement of toiletries: solid and liquid soaps, shampoo, conditioner, body lotion, toothbrush, comb, razor, vanity kit, shower cap and sewing kit. Attached to the wall was a shaving/makeup mirror. As common, the recessed lighting put one's face in shadow which did not help in shaving, or for a woman putting on makeup. Hanging from the wall were two immaculate, white bathrobes. Under the counter of the wash basin was a set of bathroom scales, an unexpected and thoughtful touch. A hair dryer was also provided.

Breakfast was provided from 6:30 a.m. till 10 a.m. Available were items cooked to order from a menu, such as eggs and crepes, and an extensive buffet which included both western and local foods, both sweet and savory. Variety was provided by changing some items from morning to morning. The buffet selection included fruit juice drinks, tea, coffee, milk, cream, cereals, baked beans, sausages, bacon, rice, noodles, pastries, breads, toast, butter, marmalade, jam, cut fruits, fruit salad, yogurt, creme caramel and other items.

The hotel restaurant served local dishes, well prepared, reasonably priced, with friendly, attentive, efficient service. There are other restaurants in the streets around the hotel offering meals to satisfy a range of tastes and costs.

It is a pity that TripAdvisor does not have a classification between Very Good and Excellent. I have rated the hotel as Excellent but, if I could, would mark it down a point because of the following slight deficiencies beyond the control of the staff.

A gap between the parquet floor and the bottom of the room door admitted the noise of activities in the corridor: slammed doors, voices, cleaners, movement and the like. Occasionally one could hear the sound of flowing water from the plumbing system of the room above. Furthermore, an open staircase connects the floors: the stairwell transmits some sound of activities between floors. Being constructed of concrete, the building itself transmitted various. extraneous noises, such as thumping and the like; however, these were rare and brief. Despite all these minor intrusions, we slept well.

All the staff whom we encountered were especially pleasant, friendly, cooperative, courteous, helpful and forthcoming; incidentally, they share tips. The attentive, prompt, efficient service rendered by the personnel warrants both recognition and reward. Given that Vietnam is an inexpensive country to visit and that people do not earn much, put money into the tip boxes — especially when you have breakfast each morning. If you can afford the trip, you can afford to tip. The tip box for the restaurant staff is at the right on the counter of the bar. The tip box for the staff at reception is on a shelf recessed at the right of the reception counter.

We used the hotel's laundry service it was so reasonably priced. Though we gave our bag of laundry to staff late in the morning, everything was returned — folded and enclosed in a transparent bag — by the time we had returned from sightseeing at the end of the day.

Room Tip: Upper floor, end of corridor away from main lift-elevator and open stairwell
