Owner description: Since 1997 Handspan Travel Indochina has been owned and staffed by people for whom travel is not simply an interesting job, but an all-consuming passion of exploring and understanding the world and the diverse cultures that inhabit our planet. We believe that tourism is fundamentally about connecting people and that the differences that separate us can be bridged with the span of an extended hand.Since our founding, we have grown into a family of more than 70 members, and have earned our solid reputation by delivering quality hospitality service, by maintaining small group sizes, and by exploring new destinations off the standard tourist path - all while remaining true to the principles of responsible tourism. We offer a variety of small group tours throughout Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia, have multiple office locations throughout the region, and offer a range of travel services including private tours as well as bookings for hotels, airlines, and rail tickets. We can also design customized tour packages according to your needs and interests. We will arrange private, custom tours for your group of any size, and can focus your tour on nature-based activities, village homestays, educational themes, or volunteer opportunities. Handspan also offers you the chance to experience Vietnam in ways that ensure that your impacts on local environmental, social, and economic contexts are positive ones. Our expert knowledge about the places we visit and the local challenges they face, enables us to design and operate tours that promote a balance between the need for economic development and ecological preservation. We do this through working closely with local communities, partnerships with NGOs and development organizations, and ensuring our guides are highly trained in ecotourism principles

When we started looking for a cruise company in Halong Bay we were completely lost among all the reviews of all the different cruise boats - they are so many! The most common review we read was that all the boats take the same route and you end up surrounded by tons of people doing the same as you. The result is that the landscape loses its magic and you get to be treated like 'cattle' (as I've read in many reviews). Of course we wanted to avoid this at all costs! It took us 3 days of internet searches to find Handspan and the Treasure Junk. This company claimed to have a slight different route than the majority of the other boats and hence a more quiet experience, so we decided to book it and this was the best decision we could have made. The service was excellent, the boat beautiful and indeed we managed to stay away from the crowds and fully enjoy the heritage of Halong Bay. In fact, we were so happy with Handspan that we ended up booking another tour with them to the perfume pagoda. :)

As other reviewers have said, it's more expensive than other trips, but was worth every penny.
We booked the suite which was fabulous - spacious and well appointed. The boat is beautiful, the food is wonderful, the staff are delightful, the itinerary is well planned, they go to the less touristy parts of the Halong Bay area and the boat is on it's own for most of the time.

Don't even bother looking at other tours - this is the one you've dreamed about.

Handspan's Treasure Junk 2 day 1 night trip to Bai Tu Long Bay was perfect. It's pretty expensive compared to the other options (at almost twice the price of a cheapie Ha Long Bay equivalent) but we really felt it was worth the extra. Bai Tu Long Bay is far quieter and cleaner. The guide Binh was everything a good guide should be, the crew were fantastic, the boat and cabins were perfect (rooms 106 and 206 in the bow even get a cute porthole in the bathroom!). The food was excellent and after reading all the advice about the expense of drinks on board we took our own bottled water and were offered but never made to feel that we ought to be buying from the bar. The activities organized were spot on. Only niggle was the short amount of time spent on the boat...with 8 hours round trip to and from Hanoi we definitely wish we'd booked the 3 day 2 night trip.

This is the trip you want to book! Excellent food, beautiful boat, nice people. We had a wonderul time on the 3 days / 2 nights tour.
My only recommendation : bring enough water for the trip if you don't want to pay 2$ for a small bottle on the boat.
