“Lovely place with really pleasant staff!”
Reviewed September 10, 2012

Great little place, could not recommend highly enough! We thoroughly enjoyed our stay in Hanoi at Rising Dragon cathedral hotel.

I made a mistake with our initial booking and they were more than happy to change it without any problems. I find it often good to be a bit suspicious about booking trips/transfers through hotels in Asia but here they gave us very fair prices and were not pushy towards a certain company when looking at Ha long bay trips.

The rooms are and spacious and with laptop access in each one. Location right next to the cathedral and only a few minute walk from Hoan Kiem Lake. This was my third time in Hanoi and love the city so our stay here only made it better!

We stayed one night in the hotel before our trip to Halong Bay and one day when we came back from our 3days/2nights trip on boat and Monkey Island. Personal was friendly and the rooms are clean and have good space.
The hotel staff also organized our tour and everything was very professional and pleasant.
We can recommend the hotel to other guests even with children.

I have stayed in a few hotels in Hanoi and have found the Rising Dragon Cathedral to be the best. The decor is tasteful and homely. The staff are amazing. The BED IS SO COMFORTABLE, and if you've stayed in hotels in Vietnam as a Westerner before, you'll know this is very important. Breakfast was nice. Price VERY reasonable...Great position.... what more can I say?? I love it here. I'm so surprised there aren't that many people reviewing this gem.

Room Tip: A Cathedral side view is much nicer than the other side.

We stayed at the rising dragon cathedral hotel for three nights. It was a great way to start our trip in Vietnam. The promised pick-up car was there on time and we got offered a nice breakfast at arrival. The staff was very friendly and helpfull. They helped us organised the trip to Halong Bay, train tickets and called the following hotel for us. It felt like we could ask for anything. Breakfast is tasty and a good start of the day. Also good location to start a day in the Old Quarter. Would stay there again for sure!

Judy and the whole staff made our stay in Hanoi so easy. They arranged for us to be picked up from the airport as well as a 2-day trip to sapa and a 2 day trip to Halong bay. They answered every question and even gave us a free-breakfast and a room to rest in for a few hours when we came back from Sapa and were early for a flight to Hue. The rooms were clean and comfortable and the breakfast was very good. But the staff was above and beyond helpful.

My friend and I did not have a great start to our trip to Hanoi. Our flight was first delayed, but the driver arranged by the hotel was waiting cheerfully at the terminal with my name clearly written. All of this was very painless, and the hotel staff greeted us with smiles and drinks upon arrival.

We had also booked a 2D1N tour with Halong Bay Tours which Judy had helped us arrange beforehand and the reception confirmed this upon our check-in. The room they saved for us was really nice and cute little balcony. We were pleased because we were tired from our trip and it was great to see such a refreshing room.

The lady at the reception kindly recommended places to eat as well as book spa services, so off we went. The restaurant we went to was good (it was Madame Hien - although we preferred Quan An Ngon which had all the street food in a great setting for super cheap) and we also went to the night market upon her suggestion. However, upon our return to the hotel was when our ordeal began. My friend couldn't find her wallet and upon dumping out the contents, we discovered that there was a clean slit in her bag and her wallet clearly stolen. It's one thing to get pick pocketed or snatch and grabbed, but the potential violence of the knife really shocked us. Let me just say that we were very careful with our belongings, but it's quite hard to prevent a knife! Anyway, we quickly canceled all of her cards, but then we wanted to file a police report for the bank / credit card companies. This was already past 12 AM, but the night clerk not only went to the police station to get the form for us to fill out back at the hotel, but he also accompanied us to the police station to make the report. We felt so bad because the night clerk's motorbike tire was punctured on our way there, which just added to the ordeal, but he calmly got a replacement tire and helped us through the whole process with the police (including translating our report into Vietnamese at 2 AM). We weren't able to get an official stamp at the time, but he said he would return to the station in the morning to get the stamp.

The next day was supposed to be our early morning departure to Halong Bay with Halong Bay Tours Phoenix Cruise. Despite going to bed at 3 AM, we got up for the 8 AM departure. 30 minutes pass - nothing - the lady at reception is calling repeatedly and can't get ahold of the operator. Finally we learn that the tour operator had cancelled our booking by mistake (despite confirmation). Needless to say our impression of Hanoi at that point is complete crap besides the wonderful service at the hotel - we were wondering if we should just give up on Hanoi and go home. However, again the hotel staff went above and beyond - they quickly booked another tour, and Judy called me on her day off to make sure we were ok with the arrangement. Because we already missed the window for pickups, the lady at front desk got into a cab with us to escort us to a meeting point with the tour bus. The poor lady got very carsick on the way there but still smilingly made sure we successfully joined the tour bus. So we were able to salvage the trip and make it to Halong Bay, which was the main point of the trip.

Upon our return from Halong Bay, Judy upgraded our room to one of their premium rooms with a balcony facing the cathedral, and updated us on their efforts to get the official stamp on the police report. Normally it would have taken a month to get the stamp, but they managed to get it for us within a few days. Then, on our last day, I asked for recommendations for a banh mi sandwich place for some sandwiches for the road - Judy kindly offered to have the bellboy buy the sandwiches for us as we were a bit rushed for time to check out, and wouldn't even let us pay for it! I also discovered that Judy only charged us for the agreed upon rate for the tour, even though the Galaxy Cruise tour we ended up on was a bit more expensive.

All in all - what was originally a fiasco of a trip was saved by the amazing efforts of Judy and her staff. I already expected great things from the other reviews but this completely went beyond my expectations. If I ever come back to Hanoi again, I will definitely stay at Rising Dragon Cathedral and I'll be recommending my friends to do the same! Thank you Judy and team!

When we stayed here it was Hanoi Spring II Hotel - so a name change has taken place. My wife and two children (7&9) stayed here for a week - and had a ball. WE in fact had a home swap - but the apartment was 12 kms from centre - so we decided we needed to be closer. And this hotel is certainly that! SO central. Great restaurants surround this hotel EVERYWHERE. A very nice, clean, VALUE for money with a SUPER staff who really know what customer service is. I trawl looking for best hotel stays...and I can tell you - STAY HERE! You will not be disappointed.
