We really loved the 2 days-one night tour in Halong Bay with Indochina Sails.
Starting with a warm welcome and a delicious lunch we enjoyed every minute on board.
We were suprised of the high level of comfort of our cabin, especially the bathroom with shower and a jacuzzi!! The crew are really welcome and capable, offering a high level of service.

I would recommend this company for a cruise around Halong Bay. The transfer from Hanoi and boarding the boat were very efficient and the staff all provided a warm welcome. The food was delicious and the cabins and bathrooms were clean and cosy. The staff were very attentive at all times and they got people on and off the boat to excursions very efficiently. I just wish we had time for 2 nights rather than 1. It was very relaxing and definitely a highlight of our holiday in Vietnam.

The rooms were nice and clean. The staff ensured we were well taken care of and addressed minor issues immediately. Some people in our family don't eat seafood and the staff went above and beyond to ensure we had plenty of tasty food. We booked private ground transfer from the hotel in Hanoi to Halong Bay and upon disembarkation we went directly to the airport for a 16:30 p.m. flight. I was concerned with catching a 16:30 flight the same day we disembarked but it worked out perfectly.

The negative things I would say about the experience is that, because Halong Bay is such a popular destination, it did feel like assembly line tourism. This is not to the fault of Indochina Sails but all the boats and people everywhere. There is also some trash floating in the water, which was sad to see.

All-in-all, my wife and I were very happy with Indochina Sails and would heartily recommend it to you, our fellow travelers. Booking on line was hassle free, with promptly-returned emails and we actually received the room that we booked, which was a nice outcome! The hotel pick-up in was efficient, the shuttle bus not too crowded and the travel time was as advertised (3 hours with a stop 1/2 way at a sales factory with clean bathrooms), the transfer from wharf to boat was done cheerfully, quickly & efficiently with no lost luggage.

We were assigned boat # 4 called Indochina Premium, which was conspicuously bigger than all other boats in the area and much more luxurious & spacious. It was junk style with folded up sails that were not used, possibly due to the absence of wind. All boats on the bay were white (dress code?). Ours was a sturdy vessel with no rats, as witnessed on other carriers, and with a reliable engine astern & a solid anchor winch at the bow. This boat was reserved for the 3 day, 2 night people so they did not have to double back and return to the dock after the 1st night to drop off the folks that stayed for 1 night only. I would recommend the 2 night stay. Whether you get off ship for every mini tour or not, it was just nice to relax and disconnect with no wireless on this luxurious boat with comfortable public areas inside and on the top open air deck.

My wife & I had a "Honeymoon Suite", which was one of two at the front of the boat on the 2nd floor with a narrow outdoor verranda. This was a great room, and worth the money, but it did slant downwards towards the stern (no problem for us) so if you like a flatter working surface, request a 1st or 2nd floor room ending in 5, 6, 7 or 8 (eg. 107 or 205...see attached photo). Our bathroom was wonderful, with good natural lighting and strong water pressure from the large, rain shower head. Bathtub water was a bit brown and the tub didn't drain properly but we weren't planning on using it anyway.

We did try the massage service, which was good. Air conditioning worked best if you opened the doors in front of the hidden unit to allow freer air flow. The complimentary bottle of red wine on the writing desk was much appreciated. The mini fridge worked well and the in room safe was spacious and easy to use. The king sized bed was very comfortable. Complimentary flip flops & robes provided in the wardrobe. The buffet-style meals were excellent with lots of choices and plenty of food for everyone. There were two Happy Hours each evening, offering 2-for-1 drink deals (not for bottles of wine though).

The "destinations" were interesting enough with a mix between eco-tourism & visits to local shops where the proprietors hope to sell you something. Understandable. You have the option to stay on the boat, so it was fine. Absolutely beautiful scenery (see attached photo), with its famous limestone protrusions out of the sea, which made the kayaking all the more fun. The extreme pollution and floating garbage (see attached photo...yes, that is a dishwashing glove) everywhere took away from it all a bit but this is Asia so not really surprising, as not a lot of rules &/or enforcement here in this respect. I hope that this world heritage site receives the respect & cleanup that it deserves and more sooner than later.

Wow what can I say – if you are even thinking about staying on a junk boat, you must stay on the Valentine. IndoChina Sails offer the best intinerary for exploring the magnificent Halong Bay over 2 or 3 days and the wonderful staff make it an experience you will never forget. We booked directly through Indochina Sails and the pre-travel assistance we received was second to none. The Valentine is a wonderfully quiet, luxury and romantic Junk Boat on which to explore the magnificient Halong Bay. The bedrooms were clean and spacious for a boat, and the food was exceptional! I am quite a picky vegetarian and they catered for me exceptionally well without any fuss, and I never received the same meal twice- the variation and effort the staff put in was fantastic. I cannot rate the Valentine highly enough. Yes the Valentine is slightly more expensive than other Junk trips but you definitely get what you pay for, and we definitely did not regret paying the extra for the fantastic service and quiet romantic Junk. It was definitely the highlight of our holiday!!!
