“The worst zoo ever”

Hanoi Zoological Gardens
Reviewed May 2, 2012

Do not encourage this by visiting this place. They have a lot to learn about keeping animals in a zoo.

Leaving debate about the "animals in a cage." Where else can children learn from nature and to learn more? Yeah, maybe the park is not enough funding. But the animals are well cared for.
Lots of space for walking, a large pond, and entertainment. If you have any free time - please visit.

The park is too small, too dirty and too crowded. City fathers need to look forward, like Lenin, to a future with open spaces. The zoo is poor, but it's a great place to see people from the city and countryside coming in for a look at a real elephant or two, and some funny Western Tourists

I feel a bit conflicted writing this, because the Hanoi Zoo is way way below best practice for zoos, but my kids had a lovely couple of hours there and it was a welcome respite from the chaos of Hanoi. If you're an animal liberationist you will absolutely hate it. The animals are uniformly sad. I am not sure why some of them were shackled, including a large stork which had its legs tied together and a couple of elephants that were chained to the spot. It certainly gives an insight into how animals are viewed in other cultures. The positives are there is quite a bit of open space and garden areas, and some rides for little kids (merry go rounds etc) that are a bit beat up but very cheap and fun for the under 8s. Highlights for the kids were lots of monkeys, some crocodiles, tigers, and a couple of hippos.

The Zoo has been constructed around Lake The Le, where you can hire a Swan peddle boat and go for a ride.

Although the grounds of the Zoo are nice to walk around, the animal exhibits leave a lot to be desired. Many of them are in poor condition and all of them are kept in enclosures that are much too small.

Many of the monkeys had some kind of skin condition and looked like they were going stir crazy in their small cages. There was no stimulation for the animals, apart from visitors feeding them whatever junk food they were eating themselves.

One leopard was kept in a cage not more than four metres square. It was obviously distressed, growling, as it relieved itself in a big sand box which was placed directly infront of vistiors.

A lone young elephant was in shackles as it ate, that I don't understand, as its enclosure was quite large. A very young Ostrich's eye was so swollen and red, it looked like it was going to burst. A larger one had missing feathers and a large inflamed patch of skin...it goes on. Please see my photos.

Scattered throughout the grounds are children's rides, which were hardly being used the day we went as there were not many children around.

After visiting the zoo for about an hour and a half, I left feeling quite distressed. In that time we didn't see any zoo attendants tending to the animals.

I understand that the funding and recourses available to the zoo are probably extremely limited, but I am sure small changes could make a huge difference to the quality of life of the animals.
