“Mouldy, smelly, unsecure, horrible rooms!”
Reviewed April 29, 2011

We stayed at this place on a recommendation from some other travellers we met. The reviews on trip advisor were ok so after a rubbish journey using trekking travel who randomly dumped us 20 minutes from the destination we all had paid for we were not as fussy as we should have been. It was one of the cheapest places we could find ($10) so we agreed it would be ok for the night. We have stayed in many other places for $10 a night and had much, much better standards of hotels, even in other cities such as Saigon.

The location was ok, and the staff were nice enough. Our washing that we gave in wasn't clean at all. There is wifi which you can use too which is good.

The room was horrible beyond belief. There was mould EVERYWHERE. The bathroom drains STANK and the door didnt close properly into its frame - you could see through into our room. The balcony door had sliding bolts but no holes for the bolts to go into. The beds were hard but this was ok. The sheets on the bed though looked filthy like they had not been changed in months.

I would think that if you are staying for one night you can proberly stomach it, but definatly not any longer, especially if you are an asthmatic - the mould is the worst I have ever seen in my life. I think the problem is that this owner has two guesthouses, and the other one is alot newer and therefore most likely in a better condition, but when you search trip advisor they come under the same name, so the reviews are for two different buildings. Stay in the second one (this must be the one advertised on their website, our room resembled nothing like them photos!) if you can as this review is for the first one which I would not recommend to my friends.

We had a great experience at Thu Giang! After a (very) long bus trip from Vientiane, a harrowing taxi ride, and a walk through the rain, we stumbled into Thu Giang wet and exhausted. They greeted us cheerfully and immediately poured cups of hot tea and offered dry clothes. Once we were settled in to our spacious room (with blazing hot shower), the staff offered some excellent restaurant recommendations - really helped us turn around from soaked and miserable to warm and happy!

Our room was quite large and included a fridge and TV. The guest house has free wi-fi but it only works on the lower floors. We paid $11/night for our room, which we felt was a good value in Hanoi. There were a variety of people staying at the guest house - backpackers, solo travelers, older couples, etc. The guest house offers tours (Ha Long Bay etc). We didn't book any and other than offering the book showing the different tours, the staff didn't pressure us. Would recommend to any friends going to Hanoi!

My husband Jeff and I stayed there in October. Then we booked a tour through ODC travel to Halong Bay and Cat Ba Island. It was wonderful! I could say we got what we paid for, but actually it was much more. Some people don't quite understand that if you book a cheaper tour, then that's what you should expect. It may not include as many meals, etc. What's nice is that there is a tour for every budget. There's no pressure either. When we returned from Halong Bay, we got our same room back, which was nice also. The rooms are very clean with a nice balcony and view. The beds were very comfortable as well, and we had hot water showers. My husband and I went to Laos for a month after staying at the guesthouse here, and when we returned again on December 6th, we had our same room waiting. We were never without the basic necessities, and we couldn't be happier. To add to the warmth of this wonderful place was a beautiful cat, which I had the pleasure of walking. I know...most people don't walk cats. I would most definitely stay here again. It was very sad leaving because the staff was so wonderful here. Another plus is that if you wish to purchase Hanoi Beer or bottled water, it's much cheaper at the guesthouse than in many areas in the city. Most places we've stayed in the past the water and beer was more expensive, but not here! We spent a great deal of time here, so please ignore any negative reviews. I speak from the heart, and this place is worth staying!

We made an advance booking to this guest house one week prioir to our arrival.
And despite having written confirmation by email from the guest house it self on our booking, when we arrived to check in, we have been refused in this guest house with evidence of over booking pratice.
We have been received by agressive shouting people with no word . It seems they forgot at some point to respect the traveler.
Guest house to avoid.

We arrived at this hostel a little more then jaded after our awful experience at Manh Dung Guesthouse. However our stay here made up for that. The staff showed us to a very basic but spotless room. She explained that she doesnt discount the rooms, but rather sells them at an honest rate. We also booked our Halong Bay tour with them. The tour was great value and we more then got what we paid for, unlike some who had booked with other companies and paid well over the odds. If you are looking for a budget place to stay in Hanoi, with honest reliable staff (a rariety in Hanoi I must say!) this is the place for you. If you are looking for a bit more comfort I would go for a hotel, but book your tours or visa services through these guys!
