Owner description: "Visiting Vietnam without listening to a rhythm of ca tru traditional music means that you've not discovered the real spirit of Vietnam yet." "Free yourself and get immersed in ca tru while enjoying performance by Thang Long Ca Tru Theatre. It is a voluntary, non-profit group of ca tru musicians founded in 2006. Long-time history, unique instruments, impressive music tones and meaningful song lyrics made ca tru recognized by UNESCO as the World Intangible Cutural Heritage." "This is a concert for about 70 persons held in an old temple in the old quarter of Hanoi. They are good about explaining the instruments and the history of the music. They even let you come try out the instruments. The hot tea and little cake is a nice touch at intermission" "The singers had such dear, expressive faces and sang with such intensity. The instruments were unique and had a real otherworldly quality to them and the presentation and overall performance were of a very high quality. I felt delighted, entertained and educated. Well worth going to see."-Visited wrote The show is on every Thursday and Saturday night at 8pm at 28 Hang Buom (Quan De Temple).

“worthwhile cultural experience”
Reviewed January 9, 2013

Vietnamese traditional music concert (45 minutes so it's tolerable if it is not your cup of tea) held in a historical old house in the Quarter for US$10. Very rustic but sweet. They are trying to revive this cultural music that was almost lost as it was not practiced for 80 years. Seating is very tight and there is no airconditioning or heating which was not a problem for us in the winter. I would be concerned in the hot summer. They serve tea and a sweet at intermission and tell you about the history of this type of music and you can try playing the instruments. We wanted to support the continuity of this Vietnamese cultural tradition so we gave a donation instead of buying a CD after the concert. The next day, we arranged through our hotel concierge to purchase the "Phanc" bamboo percussion instrument as a souvenir for US$20.

“Interesting show but not outstanding”
Reviewed January 7, 2013

It wasn't what we expected. However, the hour long show was interesting. The theater gets hot during the performance. Seats are squeezed too close together and the aisles between rows are the same as they are on an economy class airplane - hardly any room, especially for tall folks. The theater's fast food restaurant is overpriced, especially for soft drinks, coffee and tea and it is very crowded before a performance.

“Outstanding cultural experience”
Reviewed January 1, 2013

One feels for the musicians who probably have to give the same performance day in and day out, but what you will get for your $10 is a blissful hour of traditional Vietnamese evening that will quite take your mind off the hustle and bustle outside and also a candy and some delicious Chinese tea.
