Owner description: "Visiting Vietnam without listening to a rhythm of ca tru traditional music means that you've not discovered the real spirit of Vietnam yet." "Free yourself and get immersed in ca tru while enjoying performance by Thang Long Ca Tru Theatre. It is a voluntary, non-profit group of ca tru musicians founded in 2006. Long-time history, unique instruments, impressive music tones and meaningful song lyrics made ca tru recognized by UNESCO as the World Intangible Cutural Heritage." "This is a concert for about 70 persons held in an old temple in the old quarter of Hanoi. They are good about explaining the instruments and the history of the music. They even let you come try out the instruments. The hot tea and little cake is a nice touch at intermission" "The singers had such dear, expressive faces and sang with such intensity. The instruments were unique and had a real otherworldly quality to them and the presentation and overall performance were of a very high quality. I felt delighted, entertained and educated. Well worth going to see."-Visited wrote The show is on every Thursday and Saturday night at 8pm at 28 Hang Buom (Quan De Temple).

“Beautiful traditional music Ca tru concert”
Reviewed July 10, 2012

Ca tru is a Vietnamese music genre unique to North Vietnam dating back to the 15th century played for ceremonies and entertainment in the Vietnamese court. It nearly died out in the late 19th & 20th century.

Ca tru is now performed in an intimate setting seating 25 people in a traditional house in the Old Quarter (87 Ma May St). The concert is very relaxing and peaceful. (A respite from the hectic traffic outside.) An explanation of Ca tru is provided (along with an English language translation) during interval, people are encouraged to play the instruments (fantastic for children interested in music) and tea is served.

In September 2009 Ca tru was inscribed on the UNESCO List of Intangible Cultural Heritage in Urgent Need of Safeguarding.

If you are interested in Vietnamese culture I recommend you make the effort to attend the performance.

Check their web site for concert times.

“Traditional Music”
Reviewed May 19, 2012

We look for music every where -do not miss the group at the Temple of Lit . also. The Ca Tru appear twice a week and are a form that almost died out in the 20th Century. If music talks to you well worth the small price in money and time.

“Interesting”
Reviewed April 21, 2012

A traditional performance that isn't everyone's "cup of tea". It was different to other types of performances and worth a look. They encourage the audience to try out the instruments during intermission. Some people left early which I thought was very rude - the whole performance only took about an hour.

“A Wonderful Traditional Music Performance”
Reviewed March 6, 2012

But there has always been one thing I kept missing that I had on my must do list when in Ha Noi. That’s the music of Ca Tru. Ca Tru is a complex form of sung poetry only found in the north of Vietnam, and has been preserved for the past ten centuries. I am always asked to compare this music to any other music and I can’t. It stands alone in its originality. It has an amazing sound and the counterpoint between the instrument and the singer has to be experienced. It takes six years to understand and learn the music before anyone is allowed to perform. I fine it exciting that so many young people have taken an interest in this music and want to preserve it. If you like ancient music or want an amazing experience with this type of music this is for you. For more detailed information go to www.catruthanglong.com. Performances are given every Sunday thru Friday at 7 PM at 87 Ma May St and at 8 PM every Saturday at 28 Hang Buom Street , Ha Noi
I went four times dragging others along with me.
