We only stayed one night at this hotel, but if we returned we would extend our visit. The manager was very helpful and accommodating and I really couldn't fault the overall accommodation. It was very reasonably priced and fairly centrally located. Worth looking into if you are seeking clean, comfortable budget accommodation in Hanoi. There are 3 Splendid Star hotels beside each other but I can't comment on 1 & 3 as we stayed in 2.

After the horrible experience at the Prince hotel, we walked around and found this hotel. It's located in the backstreets behind the cathedral. There are Splendid Star 1, 2, and 3 all in 1 place. We visited all 3 and found the Splendid Star 2 to be the best. They were all clean, but the Splendid Star 2 was better. Our porter/waiter/receptionist 'Martin' was great. He went to the Prince Hotel, brought all our luggage to his hotel, set us up in the room. His English was very good, and he also knew a few words in French. This kid (21 years old) was definitely charming.

The breakfast was quite good, as we tried out different meals, our waiter 'Martin' would go and buy it for us.

The room has a view of the backstreet and can be a bit noisy on week-ends as the cathedral would ring its bells, and people eat and talk in the backstreets, but it never bothered us. We had a PC in our room, and Wi-Fi.

'Martin' arranged for us a few tours, kept our luggages for us when we left for Sapa. Overall, 'Martin' turned a regular hotel into a 5 star hotel. He was always there, helped us out. He's very friendly and made us forget the bad experience we had with the first hotel.

Aside from Martin, Jenny (our daytime receptionist) was also a delight. She was very nice, and helpful. The cleaning crew did a great job with our room, we were delighted and tipped them before leaving.

Room Tip: Ask for the higher up floor away from the noise

Splendid Star became our home away from home during our trip to Vietnam - we stayed there several times in between our visits to Halong Bay and Sapa. We are so sad to leave our friends at Splendid Star!

Martin and Jenny are both wonderful for organizing and recommending activities in Hanoi. Martin in particular was extremely helpful and we will miss him so much! He always made sure everything was prefect with our rooms and that we had everything we needed. We also spent a lot of time in the lobby just hanging out with Martin, sipping freshly squeezed (and free) pineapple, watermelon, and passion fruit juice.

Honestly we don't have anything negative to say about this fantastic hotel. The location is also great, near the Cathedral which has quite a few cute restaurants (La Place was our favorite nearby hangout for decent cocktails and nice rooftop) serving Western and Asian dishes.

We strongly recommend booking your stay at Splendid Star2!

Room Tip: Avoid first floor - noisy

This hotel is well located in Hanoi's Old Quarter in a quiet narrow street characteristic of the area near Hoan Kiem Lake. The hotel offers clean spacious rooms with ensuite bathrooms, together with an in house restaurant and bar at competitive prices. The outstanding feature of the hotel is the high standard of friendly service provided by the staff of the hotel, who are positively committed to ensuring that your stay is as enjoyable as possible. They arranged train tickets, forward accommodation and day trips for us, all of which were good value. Whilst these types of services were provided by other hotels during our travels in Vietnam, the Splendid Star 2 hotel was the best of the hotels we stayed at. Highly recommended.

Splendid Star 2 is a super, small hotel situated very centrally, near the Cathedral on the edge of the Old Quarter of Hanoi. It is down an alley about 1 minute walk from the Cathedral so it is quiet and entertaining: meal time on small stools which happens everywhere in Vietnam, is in the alley, the hotel staff and friends play hackey sack on the small lane infront of the hotel. Splendid Star 2 is one of three in a row. We absolutely loved this place and stayed for four different nights in a room at the back side, so it was quieter (no scooters in the morning).
Martin, the main hotel staff, who works 18 hours a day it seems, is so friendly and warm. He greets you, brings you a fruitplate, and a tea or fruit drink, and explaiins the map and what to do. He does have a pitch for tours, but did not dwell on that. Over our 4 different nights and days there, he was so helpful: taking us to the main road by the church square to organize a taxi to the Ho Chi Min site, taking us to a pho restaurant for lunch and ordering for us, giving us drinks during the day, and giving us hugs when we returned from Sapa, on a two day trip.
Jenny, (these English names are given to the staff by the hotel owner) was also very professional and helpful.
The only complaint was the driver from the airport who talked on the cell phone all the time, and for a few minutes was driving the highway with no hands, just elbows since he was talking on two different phones at once.
We complained to the staff and I wrote to the sales person by email, through whom we had reserved, and Andy responded by apologizing and offering a free ride back ot the airport.
So, a great hotel with a generous and relaxed atmosphere ; the small things that are off, like sink faucet loose, few plugs in room, missing wine glasses in room, are totally ignored compared to the perks: free Dalat small bottle of wine in the room, a computer for our use (I am using as I speak), easy wifi use for ipads, etc., and a generous western breakfast with french bread...all this and the super staff make this a place to stay. At 50$ a night for a king size round fancy bed, we will not complain.
Location, a five minute walk to the little lake which is near the old quarter, so an early morning stroll to see the folks do their exercises in the wee hours, and then two minutes more to the Old Quarter which is so interesting.
Come to Hanoi and enjoy it all!

Thanks to Martin and Jenny, especially, our stay in Hanoi was memorable. They greeted us with tea and fruit, made us comfortable from the moment we arrived, were quick to respond to every request. Breakfast downstairs was generous and good. Martin got us a cab in front of the church, and walked us to a nearby corner restaurant. They were professional and personable _ a real bonus. Otherwise, the hotel was comfortable, the free computer in the room especially appreciated. I'd recommend without reservation _ oh, except for the guy who picked us up from the airport and talked on two cells and steered with his elbows on the freeway. We complained about that to hotel staff and are getting a free ride back to the airport in compensation..
