Its a lovely hotel next to the river. The hotel staff were courteous and certainly went out of their way to meet our requests.

You need to take a taxi to just about everywhere. There are very few shops within walking distance. There is a nearby convenience store and a bakery with limited items for sale. However, taxis are easy to come by and very cheap. You will definitely appreciate being away from the hustle and bustle of hanoi central.

I used the internet twice at the business centre and it was very expensive. Internet in most hotels around the region are now complimentary or really cheap.. but in this hotel its still really costly. I ended using internet at one of the cafes at old quarters for a fraction of the price.

The hotel staff were really helpful giving us names of popular places to eat and to visit. They even offered to bring us there!!

We booked here because we could not get into the Sofitel or the Hilton. They were both full.
General impression: bad, bad. This is a rip-off for a hotel that is old, smelly, dissapoining food/restaurant and clueless staff. Plus it caters mostly to conventions. Additionally, it is far from the happening of Hanoi so you spend alot of time in a taxi.
Check-in: took 30 mins, they were clueless.
Concierge: every time we asked something to the concierge, a blank stare will be the reply. They could not advice on restaurants or anything.
Their own restaurants: a very sad affair, the Asian restaurant must be the worst I've seen in a hotel in Asia. The food has MSG.
Staff is inatentive and bored.
Room: old, boring, crying for a refurbishment. Having said that, they are quiet.
Location: you will spend most of your time in a taxi. It is a way from the main area.
It costed me the same as the Park Hyatt in Saigon but it was a total let down!

This hotel was (relative to the price paid - over $200/night, not including breakfast) absolutely unimpressive.

We booked the Sheraton because we could not afford to spend $500+/night at the Metropole & because the Hilton was booked up. That said, it was quite possibly one of the worst hotels I've stayed at, given the price, for the following reasons:

(1) The rooms are drab and dated and musty (& we were on one of the Starwood Preferred Guest floors....) - they look like a Holiday Inn circa 1985, if that helps you visualize

(2) Guests must utilize the Sheraton taxis (you will be scolded if you attempt to take another one at the hotel that, e.g., is dropping off other guests). The first one we took happily overcharged us without blinking (we discovered this later).

(3) They refused to allow a late check-out despite clearly not being at full occupancy

(4) When I approached the front dest to ask if they could break a large bill, they asked if I could come back in 30 minutes. Really? At a "business" hotel?

(5) Ditto for Traveler's Cheques (plus a hefty commission)

(6) Despite having a "Do Not Disturb" sign on our door, the housekeeping staff woke us twice asking (through the closed door) whether they could clean the room and whether we had consumed anything from the minibar

The problem has to do with a dearth of decent hotels in Hanoi. That said, if you're only in Hanoi for a couple of days (as we were), just suck it up and spend the extra money at the Metropole. It will be well worth it...

We stayed for 3 nights. The rooms were lovely and a nice bathroom. The breakfast and food was outstanding. The pool was very nice with a childs pool.

The only downside was it was a little far out so needed to get a taxi to go anywhere.

Otherwise a pleasant stay..

This is a very good hotel. Big rooms, very clean and a good breakfast. Although it´s not in the center of Hanoi as it takes 15 minutes to go to the main attractions, I would definitely recommend it.

possibly the best service i have received anywhere in the world, no request was too much trouble, all staff were exceptional. Rooms are a little tired but compared to every where in hanoi this is top class. The only place to stay and not all that expensive for those who want a good standard of accommodation.

stayed 2 nights in the presidential suite.

large room with panoramic views of the lake and neutral decoration - reminds me of the beijing sheraton of the 1990s'. The service was attentive but not intrusive. Beautiful bathtub next to a picture window looking onto the city.

My one (big) gripe was that we had to take a cab ride to town everytime. I would have preferred the central location of the sofitel.
