“Gia Bao Grand”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 1, 2012

From my the moment I arrived at this hotel I was made to feel welcome, the staff were friendly and helpful. The location is perfect, being on the edge of the hotel, and close to the beautiful Hoan Kiem lake. My room was spacious, with every amenity that I could want on my short stay in Hanoi, and I enjoyed it so much I made a point of staying here again on my last night in Vietnam. Thank you to all at the Gia Bao Grand.

This narrow little hotel in a busy street in the Old Quarter of Hanoi was our little escape from the madness that is Hanoi. Ideally placed for exploring the Old Quarter, the Lake and the Water Puppet Theatre. The rooms are beautiful, ours was I think a superior deluxe (the one shown on the website) on the 8th floor and then on our next stay we were on the 10th floor, the higher the floor the better the view but the worse the internet access! so take your pick.

Breakfast was a small but good buffet, they cook very good eggs to order. The local yohurt in litte glasses is absolutely delicious on its own or with the fresh fruit. There is Vietnamese or western breakfast options and very good danish pastries.

The staff on reception spoke English, some better than others all very helpful.

Room Tip: Higher floor for quiet and a better view, but the internet was not so good.

We had booked into Gia Bao Grand for our last stop in a tour of Vietnam. It had initially caught our eye was the rooms seemed to be quite good for the price, as well as being a somewhat central location.
I had communicated with the staff before hand that we would be arriving at around 6am off of the night train from Sapa, and had arranged a day-trip to Halong Bay through the hotel's travel agency later that morning.
Upon arriving, however, it was a bit odd to find the place basically closed down, despite the fact we had mentioned we would be in early. We had to wake the sleeping receptionist from the couch just to check us in. We had once again mentioned that we would be going on the day trip in 2 hours, and asked if we would just be able to shower up and have our baggage set in the room we were to use. The receptionist informed us that we would have to check-in early, and that it was 30$...mind you, the room itself was only 47$. It would be understandable to have the charge if we were actually using the room for the morning, however all we needed was to clean ourselves up as we were just off the train. The staff were not at all willing to work with us on this, and after arguing back and forth, we checked in.
We went on the Halong Bay trip, which was a great choice, and arrived back at around 9pm. Upon arrival, the hotel's travel agency manager, Tim, was waiting at reception to accost us. He asked if we would step aside as he wanted to discuss a miscommunication we had with him when booking the trip. Upon arranging the trip, I had accidently mentioned we would go on the trip one day prior to our check-in, so the manager wanted to take an extra 10$ off of us each, DESPITE the fact that we had ended up taking the trip on the correct date, and it wasn't a private tour anyway so there wasn't any sort of unused services. He became very rude, making us feel like he was scolding us. It was NOT a good end to the evening, and the fact that he pulled us aside immediately after the all-day trip was an annoyance. We were just off of a 3 hour bus ride, all we wanted to do was eat, shower, and go to sleep, NOT have a shouting-match with an employee.
The room itself was decent. We booked into the presidential Suite which was on the very top floor. There were cracks here and there in the walls which left gaps to the outside, which was unideal as bugs freely flew in and out. There was no shower, but instead a "steam shower" that smelled of mildew. VERY odd. And another bothersome point was the fact that there was NO turn down service, even after staying for 36 hours!
Evidently the hotel was adding a new room on the floor we stayed on (the floors are very small, as there was only one on ours at the time). It didn't seem like a problem, until construction commenced at 7am. Hammering, Sawing, Drilling, you name it-we heard it LOUD and clear. No one had bothered to mentioned to us that we were basically staying on a building site, which was highly annoying. Even worse, we had to call down to reception THREE TIME to ask them to stop! Even after that, my partner ended up going over to the workers himself and asking them to stop. Not an ideal wakeup call when all we wanted to do was have a nice lie-in and relax.
Upon check-out, we brought up all of the grievances we had, and there receptionist became very short with us. When we disputed the charge that the travel agent added to our bill from the night before, they called him and shoved the phone in my face, where he began shouting at me! SO unprofessional!
The only upside to this place is the manager Ms. Ahn. She was VERY professional and listen to the issues we came across. She had managed to take the travel agent's charge off, and even mentioned that she had confirmed with him prior to our arrival that we were not there until the following day, which was a shock to us that he would book it anyway! She was really the only professional staff member in the bunch. She asked if we would like to have a late check out as our flight wasnt until later so we could clean up before boarding our flight, which was a nice gesture. However the issues didn't stop here...upon returning, the shower in our room decided to stop working! We called numerous times to reception and all the staff on the floor didn't seem to have a clue what was going on. They sent a plumber up to fix it, but we had told them over and over our taxi was to arrive shortly as we had a plane to catch, and didn't have time for a full-on plumber's consultation. FINALLY one of the receptionist caught on and gave us another room to clean up in.
It's really too bad that the staff is so uncoordinated. No one seems to know what it going on, and they are not willing to work with you with the exception of Ms. Ahn.
In all- stay away from Gia Bao Grand if you want to spare yourself the headache.

Gia Bao Grand Hotel is a perfect place to stay in Hanoi’s city center, but still outside of the most touristic areas. There is a plenty of excellent restaurants within a few minutes’ walk, as well as all the major attractions.

We spent three nights end of July 2012 in a gorgeous room (#601). Although the ground area of the building seems rather small, the room gave a really spatious feeling even with the extra bed for our daughter.

The service is truly exceptional. Just as an example: we arrived in Hanoi by overnight train from China early in the morning at about 5 am. The concierge whom we had to wake up to open the door felt truly sorry that our room was not available yet (!), but invited us to take a seat in the restaurant and have a breakfast.

If you need any help in excursions or onward travel, don’t hesitate to ask Mr. Tim, the hotel manager who has all the information and can organize tickets for virtually every mode of transportation.

Room Tip: The suits (e.g. 601) are excellent value for money.

We were after affordable luxury for our first three nights in Vietnam and we weren't disappointed. The price was very reasonble, the room was genuinely impressive and the service was awesome. We booked a Halong Bay boat trip through the Manager Tim - it was perfect. While we were on the boat Tim's colleague called the Captain who told us that the Gia Bao Grand Hotel had secured our tickets on the overnight train to Nha Trang, at a good price, now that is service...

Room Tip: We were in room 401 and we couldn't fault it.

My wife and I along with her girlfriend stayed here after our trip to Sapa. Having stayed there 4years ago we were very pleased to see the hotel still an excellent choice. I then managed to lose my passport and my stay was extended by 6 days. The hotel staff were fantastic and came to the police station to help lodge the police report. I had to collect it the next day and she came back after work to help me collect it. The hotel also sponsored me which was required as part of getting the visa reissued on the new passport. This was all free and certainly reinforced my positive opinion of this hotel.

Everyone works to make this a great place to stay in HaNoi. Moved to this hotel because I like the location and was very pleasantly suprised by the quality of the rooms and the thoughtful service - better than similarly priced accomodation. We did other trip bookings with them during the really hectric public holiday period, when many fellow travellers were struggling to find transport options, and they spent the time and effort to get us bookings at a reasonable price. The help we received went beyond expectations and helped to make our stay memorable.
