Description: Created in December, 2008, by three French friends, Minh Spielmann, Benjamin Rascalou & Anthony Balenci, La Badiane -French for the Star Anise spice- is heralding its claim to be one of the best restaurants in Vietnam dedicated to fusion of flavors and international gastronomy. Surrounded by harmonious leaf plants, & walls predominantly white alternating with carefully chosen vivid colors, the place provides for a true feeling of calm and elegance, which gathers the best conditions to let your senses express themselves. When coming in, an open-sky corridor planted with luxuriant vegetation leads you towards the heart of the restaurant. One’s attention will be instantly caught by the multitude of perfumes & aromas flowing out of the open front kitchen. Then, depending on your mood & weather permitting, you can have your meal in the airy Patio, calm, convivial & surrounded by photographic art works. For a more intimate setting with warm colors you can choose one of the three air-conditioned rooms located between the ground and the first floor. At la Badiane, all is about food but there’s also great attention paid to the service and the overall atmosphere, so that we make sure you enjoy every aspect of your meal. La Badiane, top 500 Restaurants in Asia by Miele Guide and “Certificate of Excellence” by Trip Advisor in 3 consecutive years 2012, 2013 and 2014 will never fail to satisfy you. Moreover, at this very same “picky” travel community, there were more than 300 upvotes as “EXCELLENT” for La Badiane – a formidable rating which can only be seen for top-end restaurants.

What a delight! French cuisine in Hanoi. Great service, great food. I had crab for starters, beef for main course and creme brûlée for dessert. Bottle of Carmenere and it was GREAT value!

“La Bad Dinner”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 19, 2014

La Badiane is avoidable without loss. There is so much fantastic food in Hanoi so why risk it? I don't care what the glowing reviews say - this place is only well received because there's no competition.

Food here is a disaster. Our canapes were nothing more than shredded cheese and ham on toast. Not a good start. Smoked salmon entree was destroyed by copious amounts of pickled capers. People ordered salmon, not capers. I had the duck main course which was overcooked to cardboard and supplemented by a mount risotto that has turned into porridge. Dessert continued in it's ridiculousness with a TRIO of creme brulee's which showcases inability to stop.

Where's the simplicity, balance, flavour and texture?

Service was genuinely friendly however they lacked product knowledge: no advice on wines, little in terms of specific recommendations other than they are "all nice". I disagree.

“beautiful food”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 9, 2014

We managed to get a seat at La Badiane just before it closed for Tet in late January, and we were very much looking forward to it, having read all the reviews! We weren't disappointed. Excellent service, totally wonderful food and, other than a possibly dud glass of wine, a superb meal. Splash out for one meal here if you can, or eat here every day - if you're very lucky!

“Amazing food worth every don!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 6, 2014 via mobile

Read the excellent trip advisor reviews, and thought we would drop by. Since we weren't too hungry, we shared one starter, a crab remoulade, which was new for us and very refreshing. The manager came by to ask us how it was, and he knew exactly what went in when I asked him what the ingredients on the plate were. The mains were delicious, albeit just ever so sing ghetto over seasoned in certain parts, but my duck breast fillet was cooked to perfection. They paid attention to flavour combination, with the tamarind sauce contrasting with the sweet squash purée, and they had a few sweet potato “mille-feuilles" to create texture. My dad had some interesting blue foam! Which the waitress knew about the ingredients, and again I was impressed. We sat outside in the courtyard, which had a special rustic feel. The dessert was divine! Creme brûlée can be boring, but they have made it interesting with coconut, mango and passion fruit. Mom's mellow chocolate cake was essentially a fondant, and really hot and liquid, yum! Oldies music in the background, perfect! Would definitely recommend, they even offer to get you a taxi if you need. Top notch for the price.
