We really enjoyed this experience. Lead by Chef "Pickle", we started with a cyclo tour through Old Town's markets picking out the ingredients for lunch. Along the way, we got to sample various fruits and got tips on picking out the best ingredients. We then returned to the restaurant and spent the next few cooking up a storm. You spend more time listening and watching then chopping but that wasn't something that bothered us. Again, Chef Pickle was constantly offering tips and guiding us through the process. When it was finally done, we sat in the restaurant to enjoy our work. Overall a fun experience and highly recommended!

Thank you for loving our cooking class. We believe that after each course you will become a real Vietnamese chef to be able to prepare Vietnamese-flavored dishes for your loved ones. If you have any questions you can email us, we are always happy to answer your questions.

Today I had the pleasure of spending the afternoon with Chef Pickle and his team at the Blue Butterfly. The cooking class was both well structured and entertaining. We learnt knife skills along with a market tour and four amazing dishes that I hope to be able to replicate at home.

The wonderful atmosphere of the Blue Butterfly is a treat, especially when you get to sit down and enjoy the meal you worked on in the afternoon. The added bonus being that it tastes amazing!

I would highly recommend this to anyone who is looking for a cooking class in Hanoi. Even if you aren’t looking and have a free afternoon - this is an amazing way to fill it.

This is an exceptionally good cooking course led by a fantastic chef. It is perfect for those looking to get a taste of Hanoi in a short period of time, as you’ll make classic dishes that really do match those you’ll buy on the street.

It is also good for those serious about Vietnamese cuisine as Chef Hung has a very deep knowledge of the ingredients and origins of the dishes.

I did this once in 2016 and it was just me and the chef and the class was adapted to be more personal and included going out for a few drinks around the market. I returned in 2019 and myself and my partner did this in a larger group, which again was adapted to suit those present well (including providing a fantastic vegetarian dish which was the envy of those eating meat!).

A must visit and I really don’t write reviews.

Doesn't have pushy people trying to get you through the door.
It is a classy, tasteful restaurant
I had the roast chicken in coconut milk... Wife had the tuna. Delicious... House wine is exceptional too.

We were collected from our hotel & taken to the restaurant, where we had a complimentary drink (the coconut coffee is to die for). We met the rest of our group, an intimate group of six in total, and our fabulous Chef; Chef Pickle. Introductions complete we headed off to Dong Xuan market in trishaws.

At the market we were thrust straight in the hustle & bustle of it all, with Chef Pickle chatting with stall owners, it was great to be able to navigate the market streets with a local. Chef Pickle’s English is excellent, he has many jokes, happily answers all questions and sets a fairly relaxed pace through the busy market.

During the market visit we learnt a lot about the local produce: where it comes from, how it’s used (both in cooking and general life) and if it’s considered to be a special ingredient (eg: has medicinal properties). We were also able to sample some of the fresh produce and cooked goods as we walked through the market sourcing ingredients for our own three course meal. The market visit alone is value for money.

Back at the restaurant, the cooking class with Chef was very hands on and interactive. We learnt basic knife skills, we learnt different preparation methods and prepared all our ingredients for the meal. We made Hanoi Fried Spring Rolls, Beef Phó, Bun Cha and banana leaf salad with chicken.

The learning didn’t stop at prep work; we learnt cooking tips for each of the dishes we made, we learnt how to make a flower garnish out carrots and tomatoes, we made dipping sauce and burnt caramel sauce. Much like the market visit the cooking class was lively, fun but set at a relaxed pace.

At the end of class we sat down to eat our food and took the opportunity to get to know our cooking partners a little better. There was so much food, we all sat with full bellies and broad smiles. A great activity, well run and so enjoyable. Brilliant activity for a solo traveler, couples or a small group of friends. I think you’d struggle to find better!

A highlight of our trip to Hanoi. A guided tour of the markets and then a fun filled , informative and guided class with Chef Pickle.
Then to sit down with fellow “graduates” and enjoy the food we had made whilst sharing our stories of the wonderful country of Vietnam.
100% recommend.
