“A pleasant surprise!”
Reviewed April 13, 2009

We booked Joseph's Hotel because we saw it on Tripadvisor. We were a bit hesitant since there were only 2 reviews, but both were gleaming recommendations, so we decided to book it. We were going to stay one night and then fly off to Laos, then back after 2 nights.

The staff were very helpful. They organised a pick-up taxi for us, which they would put on the hotel bill. When we left the next morning, they wouldn't let us pay and said they were happy to settle the bill when we returned 2 nights later! Wow, we were in Hanoi for one night and never had to pull out our wallets nor change our money to Dong!

On our second night stay, they were equally very warm and helpful. We finally settled our bill, including the taxi to the airport once again.

Great value for money! The hotel is brand new, the rooms simply furnished but not lacking in amenities such as toothbrush, soap and shampoo, as well as a mini bar, and a flat screen TV, which had all the essential channels (HBO, BBC, CNN, MTV, local channels and even French and German stations!). There even is a Japanese-style bidet system in the toilet. We were very impressed!

Breakfast was good as well. Best of all, the location was perfect. It was behind the church (but the Sunday church bells did not wake us), and close to small boutique shops and some good restaurants. It is in the heart of the old town and there was no need to find taxis on the small street, because as you walk out, there is a definite buzz in the area!

The only problem was that the shower area would flood slightly when you take a shower, and sometimes spill out to the sink area. But they were happy to give us more towels when we asked for some to wipe the floor.

This little hotel offers the best of service and the rooms are super clean and offer all the comforts. It's only been open for about two months, so everything is new. The best part is the super friendly staff, with Brian (Australian) and Van as well as everyone else. They go out of their way to accomodate you. Brian even booked our last minute trips to Halong Bay and Sapa for us as well as got us tickets to the Water Puppet show. Location is very convienient too, just steps away from St. Joseph's Cathedral. It is definately an excellent value and I can highly recommend this little gem of a hotel.

I really don't want to write this review since they may be fully booked the next time I go to Hanoi! I stayed at Jesoph's the first or second week that they opened so there was still some adjustment occuring but in general I had a very nice stay. The beds are as good or better than any I have experienced in Asia (that includes Sofitel and Westin properties). The rooms are big and well laid out. The place is very clean. The bathrooms are a bit small in comparision to the room but nice and clean. The place appears to be brand new and not just new management. Nice decorating that makes if feel like an expensive boutique hotel. The location is both good and not so good. It is not in the really touristy part of Hanoi (which is good for me since I have been going to Hanoi for over a year every other month) but it is still in the edge of the tourist area. There are some interesting shops near by that have things other than the normal tourist stuff like a shop that hand makes hair clips/bows and another place with patch work cloth birds. There are some great restaurants very near by for those burned out on Vietnamese food. The cathedral next to the hotel is a nice place to visit and it does ring bells at early hours but I personally never heard them while I was sleeping. Good breakfast and good internet. Great staff. Very nice rooms. Tiny side street can make getting a taxi a little hard by Hanoi standards but still far easier than most places in the world. The entire hotel is non-smoking which is a major plus in Asia. Really for the money it is a rare gem in Asia and I will try to stay there every time I go to Hanoi.
