“Excellent Service. I Recommend But With Some Caveats”
Reviewed April 18, 2010

The amazing Tripadvisor reviews for HE4, I admit, lured us in. Since we were traveling with kids, the prospect of spending $280 per night x2 for two rooms at the Sofitel Metropole was unsavory. I do suspect the HE4 is a good choice for most folks given some other grim prospects we saw. I would simply note that if you are hoping for a more grand, full-service, and historic hotel this could disappoint. The staff really were incredibly helpful - the most efficient and pleasant folks we encountered in Vietnam, to be frank. I guess, on balance, it would have been neat to stay at the real deal, i.e., the French colonial Metropole with all that history just a block or so off the lake (though our friends there had plenty of frustrations - with the price tag - so who knows). HE4's location is perfectly fine - a bit more challenging if you have kids or are elderly, but we ended up liking other areas far better. The rooms were very clean and had the basics of what you needed (though a very weird shower contraption) but the place actually sort of reminded us of youth hostels (albeit a nicer one) we encountered decades back in Europe. Don't mean to sound like a snob here. I just want to temper these off-the-chart reviews so no one is misled! Oh, last thing: my God, they need to find some decent coffee to offer tourists. Really horrid, thick tar - and I'm someone who generally loves a bitter/nasty brew! We found it no problem elsewhere in Vietnam so availability isn't a problem. Just a thought.

We had spent over an hour, struggling through the bizarre queuing system for visas (even with a letter of approval), and arrived in Hanoi amidst the crazy evening rush-hour traffic.
We were beginning to wonder if this destination had been a good idea, but the taxi driver called ahead, hotel staff rushed out to take our luggage from the end of the lane, we were ushered into a cool and stylish lobby, and welcomed with a cold drink and perfumed towels. Suddenly, everything looked much brighter!
We had booked a junior suite, which was on the top floor, with a balcony and rooftop views. The room was medium size, but with better storage than our bedroom at home, a large, comfy bed, a free-use computer all set up on the desk (never had that before!), a bottle of wine and plate of fruit, and an excellent shower.
All furnishings looked new, and it was spotlessly clean.
Breakfast offers a nice choice and is freshly cooked as you order.

Elegance 4 is right in the heart of the fascinating old quarter, but makes a comfortable and relaxing retreat from all the bustle. The staff were, without exception, friendly and helpful, and all the reception staff spoke excellent English. They sorted out a problem with our Halong Bay cruise arrangements ( not booked through them), very efficiently.
A meal in our room, on the first night, was organised through a neighbouring restaurant.

This hotel was excellent value, and we just couldn't fault it in any way. I'd be very happy to recommend to anyone, and we look forward to returning in the future.
Many thanks to all the staff!

We absolutely loved the Elegance 4!! The family Suite was huge and beautiful. The other rooms were a bit small but just as beautiful and with flat screen TVs, with all the channels you might want, and a computer in every room. Breakfast was a la carte and delicious! The staff was my favourite part about the hotel. We felt like we were the only ones staying there. The location is awesome as well, right in the old quarter with the "Gecko" a great little bar/restaurant around the corner and all the shopping you could want. A bit noisy from the street sometimes, but that just added to the character of the whole place. I give this place 5 stars.

HE4 is well located in the Old Quarter of Hanoi. The rooms are modern, large and well equipped, with good A/C. The breakfasts are very good. Best of all is the staff: they are friendly and extremely helpful and most speak fluent and clear English. The staff was always looking out for our best interests whether it was seeing that we were safe and happy with the hotel, arranging a trip to Halong Bay, helping us with restaurants and making dinner reservations, storing our luggage, calling reliable taxis and making sure that we left and arrived safely to the hotel, and basically helping us with any needs that we had. This hotel is a gem and a super value. You can't go wrong with this hotel.

The staff is very attentive and thoughtful. Everyone and I mean everyone is kind, considerate and friendly. You feel as though you have friends available to help at all times. Everything is a short taxi ride or more commonly walk away.

Breakfast is excellent.

You have Internet access in each room.

I would absolutely stay here again upon a return trip to Hanoi.

Hanoi Elegance 4 is probably one of the best hotels I have ever stayed. Great location, right in the heart of the old quarter. The service is SUPREME, they treated us like if we had spent thousands of dollars in the hotel. The food at breaskfast is a la carte and they have fantastic french bread! they even gave us a tour to our room once we got there and made sure we were confortable at all times. It was my boyfriend's birthday while we were there, and with no request or extra charge whatsoever the manager prepared a cake and decorated our room for us. Would definitely come back here, it was truly fantastic.
