We didn't want to stay in another hotel so we found the Artisan. Told them of our problems and were shown a front facing room with a balcony. Yep we'll be back to check in. We arrived, the door was opened for us, checked in very quickly and were taken up to the penthouse for one night at no extra charge. How cool was that! Breakfast sent up to have on the balcony, Great coffee. can't get any better! Great staff, helped us with our tours, money changing and forwarding flights. There was always a young man to open the door for us. Breakfast included was fantastic. Wide choice of western or local.( The passionfruit juice is a must) In room computer, safe and Wi Fi we used. The rooms are clean with air con and the bathroom clean with plenty of room. The location is great with easy access to both sides of all the action. There are bars and restaurants just outside and great aussie burgers around the corner. Great staff. JUST DO IT!

Room Tip: Grab a front facing room with a balcony. Enjoy the street scene with a cool drink

The Artisan Boutique Hotel in Hang Hanh St in the Old Quarter is actually owned by Australians. My most recent visit for 10 nights in March 2013, was equally as pleasant as when I stayed there a couple of years ago under different name and owner. The best part about the place is that the staff know you by name and are always helpful. The location is superb being just a minute's walk to Hoan Kiem Lake and of course the bustling Old Quarter is right there. I had a balcony room overlooking the street on the 7th floor. It wasn't at all noisy despite whatever was going on down below. The cleaning staff kept the room very clean and tidy and every day there were 2 complimentary bottles of water, tea and coffee plus toiletries. Note however, that the coffee sachets come ready mixed with milk and sugar so if you like your coffee black as I do, take some of your own. Clean towels every day. The laundry service was quick and quite good although I would suggest asking that clothes be hung in the wardrobe as distinct from being folded into a plastic bag. Of course they offer airport transfers for US15 one way which is actually very cheap considering the distance and chaotic traffic. Another good thing is the free WiFi throughout the hotel and the adjoining restaurant and bar. All rooms have flat screen TV sets and have reverse cycle air conditioners. The bathrooms are about to be updated. They currently have showers over bath tubs but the owner told me that the tubs are about to be removed and the space made into shower alcove only. This will be an improvement in my opinion. There is plenty of hot water.
I would most certainly recommend this very moderately priced hotel. Actually there is a penthouse apartment which can be rented if the owner is not in residence. It is really spacious and beautifully planned. Give it a go!

Room Tip: Go high if you want quiet and perhaps a room that does not face the street.

As a backpacker this was a little treat for me. At $25 I took the cheapest room. This included breakfast.

The hotel is off the main roads and there are plenty of places to eat in the street - including the neighbouring Artisan cafe where residents get 15% off and where breakfast is served.

The room had everything, a/c, free wifi, hot water, complimentary water and coffee, tv and a double bed. And everything worked and was plumbed in properly! An immaculate room.

The staff were superb and very helpful.

I met Peter, the owner in the cafe. He bought the hotel 18 months ago and his adopted Vietnamese family effectively run the hotel and cafe. He's very proud of what he, his family and his employees have done - and rightly so.

He also told me that he has lost some faith in trip adviser as some reviews are apparently a complete fabrication and rumours are that people are paid by rival hotels to write poor reviews. I am a legitimate tourist see my blog www.jimfogdenwt.blogspot.com to see!

A spotless hotel with superb staff.

Thank you Peter (with new teeth) and staff

I'm staying in Hanoi long-term at the Artisan. The site is located near the very beautiful Hoan Kiem Lake. Artisan itself has the friendliest staff I've met. The room itself is also elegant and very clean. Next door, the Artisan has its own cafe which gives a 10% discount. Nearby are many other good restaurants.

This hotel is located in a quiet street and is only a few minutes walk from the old district and Hoan Kiem lake. I stayed in one of the cheaper rooms around the stairwell. The room was clean and quiet, wifi worked fine and so did the hot water & plumbing. My only gripe is after a really hot shower the humidity would spread around the room (though there is a window onto the stairwell to help). Staff were extremely helpful organizing taxis, airport pickups recommending places to eat and calling our hotel in Hoi An to help change our schedule. Breakfast in the cafe next door is fine. When i go back to Hanoi I'd happily stay here again

Room Tip: It's a quiet street most of the time so noise isn't really an issue. More depends on whether...

The hotel is located in the tourist precinct of Hanoi. It is well located - a short stroll from the Night Markets, Hoan Kiem Lake, shops, cafes etc. If you are considering booking a group tour to Halong Bay, the tour guide should be able to pick you up from the hotel. Staff were friendly, though their English was a little poor. Breakfast (included in the price) was in the neighbouring cafe, and was quite nice - give the crepes and mango juice a try. The hotel offered free wifi, and they provided us with a laptop for the room when we requested (the laptop was from the early 2000s and was really slow - but was alright for checking emails etc).

Our room was quite rundown, and not nearly as nice as the professional pictures. Also, the bathroom had no ventilation and so there seemed to be a damp/mouldy smell in the room. It's a noisy street, and it can be difficult to get a good night's sleep at times.

All in all - good value for money, but nothing luxurious.

Room Tip: Rooms facing the street are noisy.
