“Far too noisy, receptionist spoke no English and was not help whatsoever. Clean small rooms.”
Reviewed February 11, 2013

This hotel has obviously been confused with the other splendid star hotels and has also changed its name to the Hanoi Ciao Hotel. Hardly slept as surroundings so noisy and hotel reception noisy at all hours if the night. Only windows backed onto the solid wall of the building next door about 1m away so room constantly dark. Air con never worked and receptionist unable to assist us. Tried to charge us far too much for taxi to airport so found better deal elsewhere. Would be fine for one night as affordable and clean in the bedroom but not recommended for long stay as noise pretty unbearable.

We enjoyed our stay at this hotel. It was located off the main street so the location was quiet. The breakfast was very good. The building was older which I really liked. We were able to get a private day tour and a day trip to Ha Long Bay booked through the hotel. Both tours were fantastic. Martin, (front desk) pretty much ran everything while we were there. He was very helpful. The one issue we had was with the shower. The caulking needed to be replaced around the bathtub because when you took a shower the bathroom floor got wet from the water running down the side of the bathtub. That's the only issue we had. Loved the location of the hotel.

Room Tip: We were located at the front of the hotel on the second floor. I liked that location but don't h...

Clean hotel. Pretty basic but the beds are comfy, the bathroom is clean and the location is quiet and in the city center. Everything you need is close by.
Downside: Everything you buy inside the hotel (additional travel, beer, water, laundry) is horribly overpriced. Feels like a rip off. On the other side - you don't have to buy anything there.

Our stay at this hotel started out okay because the man who checked us in was so nice and we had a yummy pancake breakfast the first morning. It all went downhill from there. Our room was tiny, dirty, and the paint was chipping off the walls. We had no window, except an open window to the hallway that wouldn't close so it was pretty noisy in our room. The TV and internet barely worked, and when we asked the staff for help, they said they'd check but never did. My fiance and I usually ordered 1 breakfast each, 1 juice each, and 1 coffee each. After a couple of days of this, they decided that we could not have all of this free of charge (even though the website said complimentary coffee/tea) so they would bring us out the cheapest items that we ordered and not respond when we asked for an explanation. I feel bad writing this review because two of the guys were super nice and tried hard, but the rest of the staff was so rude and made it unbearable for us to even go back at the end of our night. I hardly ever write reviews but I feel like I should really let you know about this place before you end up here.

Our experience was OK but not great. We were dropped at the wrong hotel firstly as there are 3 with the same name in the same area. Wifi & TV didnt work. They knew there was a problem but werent up front with us about it. Took 3 days to resolve the problem...but it was resolved. The food is ordinary but if its part of the deal you cant complain really. There are Sooooo mant hotels in the area, I feel there has to be a better choice.

Check in was fine... We were greeted very nicely and were very politely shown a map of the area before being shown to our room. The location of the hotel is good. This is where the positivity for this hotel stops. During check in we were sold the hotels taxi service to the airport for the date we were leaving. It was more expensive than the taxi we had just got out of from the airport but the guy said that if we took their taxi service they would kindly offer us breakfast at 6am on the day we left (we were getting an early flight to Bangkok 2 days later).... When we checked out on our final day at 6am we woke the staff up in reception and we were not offered anything, we were simply taken straight into a taxi. After we had been sold our taxi trip we were shown to room 401 which is supposed to be a 'superior'... It was absolutely disgusting. There was damp and mould all over and the revolting smell clearly reflected this. Immediately we went down to reception to ask to move and we requested to pay for an upgrade to a deluxe room. We were shown to room 601 which has a shabby balcony. We accepted this as it didn't smell which was some form of improvement. There were ants on the bathroom floor, an old sickening shower curtain and the interior is hugely outdated. I don't understand the point in having a computer in the room when that money could have been better spent on painting the room. Our bedsheets had holes in and a cigarette burn.

Breakfast was ok. The guy who gave us our menu allowed us about 2 seconds before asking what we wanted then looked annoyed when I asked for a few minutes to decide. We were told we could have one thing only off the menu. When he came back to take our order he interrupted our every second word to answer his phone.  The banana pancakes were nice. The orange juice was not.

At no point during my 2 night stay did the wifi work anywhere except the lobby of the hotel. When a friend asked the reception why the wifi was not working in her room she was told it was because it had been raining... Complete rubbish as it didn't rain at all during our stay and why would the lobby still be the only working connection if this was true? I also informed reception that the wifi in our room wasn't working and was told they would fix it but obviously this did not happen.

I understand that this hotel was cheap but I have stayed in hotels a lot cheaper in Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam which somehow manage to maintain a basic standard. The only reason I stayed here and did not move is because we were flying to Bangkok to stay in 5 star luxury so I knew I had a decent shower and clean bed to look forward to.

When a friend (who arrived the day after me) was complaining about their room, a rat ran up the stairs from reception... The guy on reception claimed this was normal in a city hotel. Vile doesn't come close to my opinion of sharing my hotel floor with rats.

People who have written reviews claiming there are flat screen tv's, spa baths etc have clearly got the hotel confused - there is more than one splendid hotel on the same street (I've seen splendid star suite hotel and splendid star 2 hotel) and I'm sure they would have been much nicer than this one. This 'Splendid star classic hotel' (althoigh there is no 'classic' in the name on the sign outside) is not to be recommended and I would 100% not consider staying here ever again. If you have to, pay a couple of $ extra to have a room in a hotel you feel clean in.
