If you want a truly unique experience then SOI and their team will make it happen.
I worked with Ms Ana and Ms Ivy on my last minute request and they more than delivered during a holiday season. They got us fantastic private tours that made stops at all the places we wanted to go and skipped all the places we had no interest in. They gave us so much value it was truly incredible. We could not find a better boat, private guide and 2 day tour for the price. In fact we looked at so many others offering less but charging far more. If it was not for their fast replies and willingness to truly tailor our tour then our holiday would have been a disaster. But thanks to them we had a fantastic time as well as great recommendations for dinner on the way back while in Hanoi. Thank you so much once again SOI as you save our holiday.

Dear Sails of Indochina lovers,

Thank you very much for your feedback! It is our great pleasure to welcome you on the board of Sails of Indochina. Thank you so much for your informative review and recommendation. We highly appreciate your compliment about the authentic cruise, fully furnished rooms, nice tours, and delicious food. Halong bay was recognized by UNESCO as World Heritage Site, therefore, its scenery must be truly amazing, and stunning for everybody seeing the lovely bay by themselves. Once again, thank you for your review and recommendation and hope to welcome you again in this charming country.

Sincerely,
Sails of Indochina Cruises

My husband and I stayed two nights in one of the indochina sails boats with two other friends and all of us absolutely loved it!!!
The bay and its landscape is unique and incomparable, and having the opportunity to stay on a boat with that permanent view is an outstanding experience.
The boat was fantastic. The rooms were extremely clean and beautiful. There was a big and comfortable bed with a massive window next to it from where we could see all the bay. The toilet was really nice, clean and well decorated. All the facilities were impressive, including the restaurant and the top part with sun beds. Everything was really well organised by the staff: dinners and lunches, day trips to the beach and on board activities such as squid fishing! Also the staff was welcoming and friendly, always there to help you and give you the best time possible!
We all agreed by the end of our trip that next time we definitely should stay longer!

We did two cruises while in Halong Bay. The first day we were in Halong bay, and while the food on board was excellent, the cruise itself was quite touristy, and the locations that we visited were crowded. You are not allowed to be out on the front of the boat, or on the top deck when you sail into the docking areas. Once again, not the fault of the tour companies, but of the Vietnamese government, who will fine the boats if they see this. This is not a reflection at all on the tour company, but on the fact that Halong has become overcrowded. Our second day in Lan Ha bay near Cat Ba island was completely different. A much less touristy, less crowded area, and our boat was a traditional Junk. We went kayaking in a beautiful area where you paddled through cuts in the rock and caves to find yourself in enclosed lagoons full of singing birds. We had our lunch freshly prepared by the crew and it was one of the best meals we had ever had including shrimp, squid, oysters, rice, cabbage, pork, and the finest fried fish that I have ever eaten! Our guide was enthusiastic, and constantly checking if we needed anything, offering fresh fruit, tea and coffee. They will cater for food allergies or special dishes. It does take a while to get there, but it is worth it. We took a mini-bus to the marina (15 min), a speed boat (15 min) to Cat Ba, and then took a minibus (30 min) to get to Lan Ha bay on the other side of the island.

We did the 3D/2N private junk off-the-beaten-path cruise with Sails of Indochina. Overall, we really enjoyed our trip. The salesperson was great in helping to organize the trip and was very responsive. The food was some of the best that we had our whole trip - lots of fresh and delicious seafood! The crew was friendly, but they didn't speak any English.
This is where we feel like there were a couple small things that the company could do to turn this tour into a 5-star experience. It's totally fine that the crew didn't speak any English, but it would have been helpful to have some guides to aid in communication or at least a heads-up beforehand. We had no idea where in the bay we were at any time. We were given opportunities to kayak, which we did, but had no idea what the sights were. Looking back, I think we were near a famous cave but missed out on it because we didn't know where to go. It would have been nice to have a map or some key attractions on the itinerary available on the boat that the crew could point to, as well as some key phrases to help us communicate with each other more effectively.

The other area that could have been better operated was the transportation to/from the boat. We were given a scheduled pick up time for a hotel but no other information. It was a shuttle bus through another company, where they asked to see our tickets when we boarded but we didn't have any. It ended up turning out fine but we had no idea what to expect and were just hoping that at some point along the journey, someone would be waiting to pick us up which thankfully, they did.

We enjoyed our trip very much and would recommend it to others, but I would just caution that expectations are set appropriately if this tour is chosen. It is a small wooden junk boat with just the one room and no running water (you pump the toilet and use a bucket), though there is basic electricity. It's definitely off the beaten path and a great experience, but not at all similar to what you might expect if you looked at any of the other major cruise companies in Halong Bay.

We wanted to see the land/seascape of Halong Bay, but being surrounded by tourist boats and floating garbage wasn't appealing at all. In looking for alternatives, we found Sails of Indochina's Lan Ha cruise and it was a perfect fit!
Getting picked up and dropped off from our hotel in Hanoi made life much easier, and once we were on the boat the food was terrific as were the sights. All the standard stuff you would expect for such a cruise, but with many fewer people. I would definitely recommend doing the 3 day 2 night tour if you can because otherwise it's a lot of travel and transfer without as much sightseeing
