We initially thought staying in HalOng bay would be great way to fully embrace the newly dubbed "Natural Wonder of the World". Wrong. Halong city is a ghost town full of smoke from the local coal mines and abandoned half constructed hotels. There's only 2 edible restaurants in town and the overall atmosphere is dreary.
If you must stay in Halong city I suggest anywhere but this hotel. Don't book ahead or look online for any places either, because once you're dropped off via shuttle from Hanoi to Halong there will be rows and rows of empty hotels waiting to snatch your money. But seriously, there are over a dozen hotels on the street that the shuttle drops you off.
As for this hotel, rooms are decent size, furnished with tacky furniture, and the bathroom is something youd expect to see in a $7 room in Kuta, Bali (gross). There is hot water, sometimes, which was a real pain because it's very cold in Halong bay this time of year. On a higher note breakfast is pretty good and they do provide a heater if you ask for one.
The big problem we had with this hotel was that if you don't book any overpriced tours through their hotel they treat you like trash. We thought we'd be sneaky and book a $15 tour for 6 hours through the tour office at the Halong bay harbor. But of course when the shuttle came to pick us up the next morning the hotel management was furious that we didn't book their exact same 6 hour tour for $60. Needless to say our room wasn't cleaned for the next 2 days and it was impossible to find the manager in the morning to order breakfast.
Honesltly, this wasnt the worst hotel we've stayed at throughout our 4 months trip through south east Asia, but this is the worst service we've experienced. For the same price look somewhere else when you get here or better yet, don't stay here at all. Do a day trip.
