“Stay somewhere else or better yet, don't stay in Halong city”
Reviewed January 23, 2012

We initially thought staying in HalOng bay would be great way to fully embrace the newly dubbed "Natural Wonder of the World". Wrong. Halong city is a ghost town full of smoke from the local coal mines and abandoned half constructed hotels. There's only 2 edible restaurants in town and the overall atmosphere is dreary.

If you must stay in Halong city I suggest anywhere but this hotel. Don't book ahead or look online for any places either, because once you're dropped off via shuttle from Hanoi to Halong there will be rows and rows of empty hotels waiting to snatch your money. But seriously, there are over a dozen hotels on the street that the shuttle drops you off.

As for this hotel, rooms are decent size, furnished with tacky furniture, and the bathroom is something youd expect to see in a $7 room in Kuta, Bali (gross). There is hot water, sometimes, which was a real pain because it's very cold in Halong bay this time of year. On a higher note breakfast is pretty good and they do provide a heater if you ask for one.

The big problem we had with this hotel was that if you don't book any overpriced tours through their hotel they treat you like trash. We thought we'd be sneaky and book a $15 tour for 6 hours through the tour office at the Halong bay harbor. But of course when the shuttle came to pick us up the next morning the hotel management was furious that we didn't book their exact same 6 hour tour for $60. Needless to say our room wasn't cleaned for the next 2 days and it was impossible to find the manager in the morning to order breakfast.

Honesltly, this wasnt the worst hotel we've stayed at throughout our 4 months trip through south east Asia, but this is the worst service we've experienced. For the same price look somewhere else when you get here or better yet, don't stay here at all. Do a day trip.

We stayed there after bout trip before going to Quan lan island. It is less than 1km from tourist boat pier and just across from souvenir market. It hase a e view from the balcony but steep uphill walk to the entrance. It is a little bit old but cheap and manager is very helpful. There was a construction of a new hotel very close in November 2011.

I've been here last October. The hotel's facilities is ok (a bit concern about too much hot water & less cool water in toalet).
Though, I was unable to visit the Bay due to the storm but the manager (Mrs. Huong) was very nice & handful in guiding us necessary information to continue our tour.
It's better to ask for her advice/support in getting taxi/moto-taxi to go to other places (she's quite fluent in English).
Nice hotel & nice manager with suitable room rate, I'll be here next time.

Room Tip: 2nd floor rooms are covered by a big tree. One big hotel is under construction next door, I don'...

The hotel is basic, simple but clean, confortable and very well located ; but take care with the boat tour they proposed... Ownerand staff of the boat seem to belong the same family Thuy Duong Hotel...Once inside the boat i have been robbed some money and even clothes... the staff operated when you re on excursion out-board, or on the top floor of the boat..; So dont let anywallet (of course) but also any bag on board

My husband and I together with another couple stayed at this hotel on and off for approximately 1 week. Nung, the owner/manager was so helpful with everything we needed, i.e. booking a tour of Ha Long Bay, finding our way around Bai Chay and Hong Gai (together now called Ha Long City) and giving us written instructions, booking our bus trip to Hanoi and generally caring about our welfare in a way you would expect from a family member not a hotel owner/manager.

The location of the hotel is across the street from the beach, close to the night market, to restaurants and about a 15 minute walk to the dock where the Ha Long junks are docked.

Our room had a little veranda overlooking the Bay where we would enjoy our breakfasts in the morning and a sundowner in the evening. Our room had two queen size beds, a TV, a bar size refrigerator and, of course, a full bathroom. We were very comfortable and appreciated the cleanliness as well.

The hotel has a restaurant with advance reservations only. The hotel also rents out motorbikes at a very reasonable rate.

This hotel addressed and satisfied all our needs and provided us with far more than any 5-star hotel would have. I have no qualms about recommending this hotel.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a veranda overlooking the Bay
