“Dragon Pearl II”
Reviewed April 4, 2013

Our experinece on Indochina Junk , Dragon Pearl II was wonderful. the food was excellent, the staff could not do enough to accomodate our needs and the scenery was breathtaking. I must say, the dinner in the cave was an experience I will never forget. I would highly recommend the 3D/2N trip as compared to the one night 2 day trip as we were able to take advantage of the kyaking, the beautiful scenery and the talented entertainment in the evening. A bumpy ride from Hanoi but the road improvements underway should help that before long.

“Wonderful”
Reviewed April 1, 2013

What everyone has said is true, and I have nothing more to add but to encourage you to go on the trip! We took a 1 night 2 day trip. Although the room was very small (to be expected), it was clean and the large windows allowed for spectacular views. Our host was very friendly and genuinely interested in our well-being. Crew was fab too! If you want to dine in the cave, go for the 2 nighter trip.

“Excellent trip in a beautiful part of the world”
Reviewed March 31, 2013

We booked this trip via Red Dragon Junk tours and I found the communication leading up to the trip was excellent. All my emails and questions were answered promptly. We booked a 3D/2N trip and ended up in Prince III, a smaller 8 passenger junk.

Yes, it was a bumpy four hours drive to Halong Bay from Hanoi, but we were warned about it from the tour booker and so knew what to expect. Not the company's problem that the roads are not very good. We also had plenty of space in the bus, there and back, which made it easier.

Check in was easy and they even had wifi while we were waiting. Transfer to the boat was seamless and we met our guide for the trip, Anh as well as the other passengers. Anh is a very enthusiastic, polite and funny young man, very knowledgable and eager to answer any of our questions on anything to do with Vietnam. The other passengers were also very pleasant.

The food was delicious and we were never hungry. We enjoyed the kayaking, visit to a fishing village and beach BBQ very much and the scenery was stunning. The cabins were of adequate size with lovely large windows and what we considered to be a huge bathroom considering the size of the boat! There was plenty of hot water and and good water pressure from the shower, very welcome as it got a bit chilly later on in the evening (due to the time of year we went)

We hardly saw anyone else all trip other than when all the boats moored up together in the same bay at night time and that just felt cosy.

In the evenings we could have a couple of beers and fished for squid with the captain and crew! I even caught one and think we ate them the next day!

The only down side for me was our room seemed to be right next door to the nighttime generator, which needs to be on all night for air con, electricity etc..... As I am a light sleeper it kept me awake for both nights, however, my husband slept straight through so it all depends on how light a sleeper you are. I think it may be time for the boat company to replace the old style generators with battery ones?

The other staff on the boat were also very polite and courteous and considering they all work about 25 days solid out of every month, they should be commended for continuing to be so cheery!

“What the other reviewers DIDN'T rave about ;-)”
Reviewed March 31, 2013

Hello - not much I can add (to the other reviews) I'm afraid! Perhaps some clarification, strictly to assist you in choosing the 'right' boat for you, versus any indecision about the Indochina Junk company as THE group to choose!

The Indochina Junk company runs a small flotilla of boats of varying sizes. I don't know them all - that's for their website - just know that the company demands and achieves a high standard of service from all its staff - from the young lass Nguyen, Thuy Mai who worked with me to select the right tour, to the van driver who arrives at your hotel, with English speaking guide in tow, through to the captain of your vessel and the smiling and helpful crew. Service will always make up for the inevitable little things that go awry.

We selected the Dragon's Pearl cruise, 3 days and 2 nights on Bai Tu Long Bay. There are three 'Dragon's Pearl' junks, we were welcomed aboard the Dragon's Pearl II. With any form of cruise, of course the real worry (if there is one) is not around the boat (oops, maybe for some cruise lines) - but instead the fellow travelers you'll meet and be shacked up with for 3 days. We had the distinct pleasure of engaging with around 20 other guests, buddies, couples, families, extended families. And we exchanged contact details at the end, to keep in touch and share photos. A shout out to Ben, Jaz, Kylie, Adam, Ian, Nori, Michelle, Joseph, Heather, Trevor, LIam, Indi, Kaya, Indrik, Mari, Nancy, Pierre, Anna, (new baby), Nicola, Francoise ...

Now why is this remarkable? Because Anh, our shipboard 'cruise director' ensured that we were all treated and cared for as individuals, as well as a group. He knew everyone's name within the first 5 minutes and used throughout - and was not adverse to some fun teasing and laughter with us all.

The entire trip to Hanoi and Ha Long Bay, from airport pickup to airport drop off, was spectacular. And these 3 days in the middle were a particular treat.

Enjoy and appreciate.

“Lovely trip”
Reviewed March 31, 2013

We really enjoyed the tour, the guide wad very good. The only downside is the fishing village it is way to commercial,we didn't really travel 5hours to get there and see shops.
I also suggest having a tip box.I feel uncomfortable in the end the captain come around to collect the money.we would give tip anyway but having someone collecting it just gets awkward.

Dear Ms/Mr. Chen W,

Indochina Junk is of great thankfulness for your below comment!

We would like to explain that tipping is not mandatory on Indochina Junk boat. Just you are happy after the trip, somehow excellent services can be marked differences and spoken out, in tips. At the end of trip, all of the crew show up to say farewell and best wishes to our guests, including back of house staff, such as the machenic, the chef, the captain who you might not even seen around. We think that is most feasible time when guests might leave tips in cash, handing them directly to the person who are helpful during the tour.

Unfortunately, we are very sorry if this way might caused any inconvenience to you. We appreciate your advice about the tipping box and take it into consideration for the next tour operation.
If you have any more concerning regards to this matter, please do not hesitate to contact us.

Thank you again and Indochina Junk wishes you all the best!
