Thank God we listened to other travellers who convinced us that we would be really disappointed if we did the 2 days and 1 night trip on Halong Bay. We changed it to 3 days and 2 nights and it was one of the best things we did during our 5 week holiday in Asia. We ended up on IndoChina's Dragon Pearl Number 3, which only took some 20 people. The junk was great and exceeded all our expectations. We had a veritable 'United Nations' on board as there were people from Tahiti, Brazil, Australia, Scotland and, when you throw in 6 Latvians, you know the trip is going to be a good one. Add Mr Wang (affectionately known as 'Whisky') our guide who was great as was his English and his sense of humour, a crew who couldn't do enough for you and the experience was worth every cent! The BBQ dinner in the cave on the 2nd night was simply magical and the Dragon Pearl crew topped off a great night by singing to us at the end of the dinner. Not to be outdone the Latvians responded but 'Waltzing Matilda' was the last song that echoed through the cave that night. That was certainly one of the many highlights of the trip. Of course, you just can't go past the serene, tranquil beauty of the bay itself. A visit to the fishing village was also a highlight but, if you go with the intent of buying pearls, be aware that there are two locations at which pearls may be purchased and we found the pearls at the second location to be of a better quality than those at the first. Being rowed around the village in bamboo boats was certainly a highlight! (Score 1 to the Latvians as one of the girls took along some sweets which she offerred to the school children there. That was pretty cool. You should have seen their faces light up). Swimming (the water temperature was ideal), kayaking, fine dining (the food was so delicious), cheap drinks, great service, great company, great weather (we were there 11 October - 13 October - and this was supposedly the low season because of the wet weather - what wet weather?), and you start to get an idea of why we wanted to stay. 3 days, 2 nights on IndoChina's Dragon Pearl - UNREAL!!!

we booked our Halong Bay tour to go on The Red Dragon 2 , which is a small junk with only 5 cabins. The trip up there was long and it poured and we were delayed boarding due to the heavy rain. We were beginning to think the trip would be washed out. However we finally boarded with our fellow passengers and the rain stopped and never came back. The boat was very comfortable although very disappointed that all the junks are now white. They have lost all their individual character and they look grubby now. Who ever thought up that idea has made a big mistake. The cabin was comfortable and had all the amenities, hot water and comfy bed. The staff were great, the food was out of this world and our tour guide was one of the nicest men I have met. The trip to the island for a kayak and a visit to the caves was fun and apart from having to move in the night due to drifting in a strong wind, the trip was a highlight of our holiday. The only down side is the long trip there and back and the mandatory stops which on the way home we could all have done without.

We booked our 2-day/1-night cruise on the Dragon Pearl (turned out to be No. 3) before leaving the US. It turned out to more than meet our expectations. The 20-person/10-cabin boat was great. Our room was very clean and comfortable with all the amenities one needs, including AC. The food was really great (taste AND presentation), staff very attentive and accommodating, and of course, the scenery spectacular. Our guide (Phouc) was especially good in explaining the history and culture of Bai Tu Long Bay, giving us an excellent understanding of everything we saw and did. The beach, swimming, kayaking, exploring a cave, seeing a fishing village from a small boat.....we did a lot in 24 hours, but never felt rushed. The whole thing was very organized from the pick-up at our hotel in Hanoi, to getting us there and onto our boat and getting us back (although the mini-van was new, the roads are not and 3.5 hrs. is a long trip, even with a 30-minute rest stop, be prepared). We felt well taken care of.

After a nightmare transfer from Hanoi, and the obligatory stop at tourist shop en route, my blood pressure was starting to rise, but was instantly dropped the moment we stepped onto the boat. Nothing was a problem to the crew. From kayaking to lunch on a private beach, to mooring every evening far away from the other junks, the crew were incredible. I cannot recommend this company enough.

We took a trip on Dragon Pearl, a junk with about 20 other passengers. I had no preconceptions but was pleasantly surprised on all counts. This was like traveling back in time to civilized travel (think Orient Express, Poirot, Agatha Christie) where the pace is calm, atmosphere tranquil and scenery stunning. The space on board was plenty to be able to meet other passengers and chat without being in any way bunched together. The accommodation was excellent, clean and comfortable, the food great and service in general, top class without being fussy. Hats off to Indochina Junks and their crews. (As an aside I would recommend this company since talking with some local officials later, not all junk trip companies are the same.)
